Chelsea Issue Enzo Fernandez £120m Ultimatum as Manchester City Consider Blockbuster Move

Chelsea have given clubs interested in Enzo Fernandez until Friday evening to submit an offer of at least £120 million, setting the stage for a decisive conclusion to the midfielder’s long-running uncertainty at Stamford Bridge.

The deadline is understood to be 17:00 BST on Friday, with Chelsea determined to avoid the saga extending into the new season.

The club are expected to maintain their valuation despite paying £107m to bring Fernandez from Benfica in 2023.

Fernandez’s Chelsea future has been uncertain

Questions over Fernandez’s future intensified in March when the Argentina international raised the possibility of moving to Real Madrid.

His representative, Javier Pastore, later added to the speculation by claiming that Fernandez was unhappy with his financial situation and wanted to leave following a disappointing campaign for Chelsea.

The midfielder’s concerns emerged after a difficult season in which the London club finished 10th in the Premier League and failed to win a trophy, including a defeat by Manchester City in the FA Cup final.

Real Madrid step away from potential deal

Real Madrid have since indicated that they are not planning to pursue Fernandez, significantly reducing the number of clubs publicly linked with a move.

Manchester City are currently the only known potential suitor, although Pep Guardiola’s side have not indicated whether they would be willing to meet Chelsea’s £120m valuation.

City are also considering a move for Lille midfielder Ayoub Bouaddi, potentially complicating their decision over whether to make a major investment in Fernandez.

Chelsea want a clear resolution

Chelsea’s Friday deadline is intended to bring clarity before the start of the new campaign.

The club believe Fernandez and any interested parties have had roughly two months to negotiate a transfer and regard their asking price as reasonable.

The approach also places the responsibility on potential buyers to act quickly if they want to secure the 25-year-old midfielder.

Chelsea are understood to have little interest in allowing negotiations to drag on beyond the deadline without a serious offer.

Alonso holds talks with Fernandez

New Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has already spoken directly with Fernandez about his situation.

Alonso has chosen not to disclose what was discussed, leaving the midfielder’s position unresolved publicly.

Chelsea, however, have made it clear that the door remains open for Fernandez to stay.

If no acceptable bid arrives by the deadline, the club intend to reintegrate him into Alonso’s squad and continue treating him as an important member of the team.

Fernandez remains a major attacking contributor

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Fernandez remains one of Chelsea’s most productive midfielders.

He scored 15 goals and registered seven assists across 54 appearances last season before joining Argentina at the international tournament.

Fernandez helped his country reach the final, where Argentina suffered a 1-0 defeat to Spain after the midfielder was sent off.

His performances underline why Chelsea are reluctant to sell unless their substantial valuation is met.

Friday could decide the next chapter

Fernandez returned to Chelsea training this week for the first time since Alonso took charge, adding another twist to the developing situation.

Unless a club meets Chelsea’s £120m demand before Friday’s deadline, Fernandez is expected to remain at Stamford Bridge and begin the new season under Alonso.

The coming hours will therefore determine whether one of Chelsea’s biggest recent signings becomes the subject of a record-breaking departure or starts a new chapter with the club.
