At least seven people have reportedly been killed and dozens injured following an explosion and major fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta, Canada.

Emergency crews rushed to the military installation on Saturday after a fire broke out in a training area and spread into surrounding rural land. Authorities confirmed that the incident had resulted in fatalities and injuries, although officials had not released a complete casualty count.

Sources cited by Global News reported that at least seven people had died. The circumstances surrounding the explosion remain under investigation.

Hospitals Struggle to Treat Injured Patients

Hospitals in Edmonton, approximately 180 kilometres from the base, began receiving injured people following the incident.

Warren Thirsk, an emergency department doctor at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, told CBC News that healthcare facilities around Wainwright had become overwhelmed by the number of people requiring medical attention.

He said hospitals in Edmonton were preparing to handle a major influx of patients, describing the incident as a disaster of a scale that could overwhelm the city’s healthcare system.

Emergency departments were clearing capacity and mobilising staff to respond to the situation as injured military personnel and others were transported for treatment.

Live-Fire Training Exercise Reportedly Underway

Sources told Global News that a live-fire training exercise was taking place at the base when the explosion occurred.

According to those sources, the exercise may have resulted in personnel striking either a gas line or a gas well, triggering the blast. However, authorities had not officially confirmed the cause.

Canadian Defence Minister David McGuinty said investigators were working to establish what happened, describing the situation as highly active and delicate.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) confirmed that officers were called to the base shortly after 4pm on Saturday following reports of a fire in a training area.

Defence Minister Confirms Deaths and Injuries

McGuinty confirmed that people had died and others had been injured but did not provide further details about the casualties.

Speaking to reporters in Ottawa, he said he could not recall an incident of similar severity during his time as minister or in recent memory.

He said authorities would provide additional information in the coming hours and days, while expressing condolences to the families affected by the tragedy.

The minister also thanked emergency responders and others assisting those caught up in the incident.

Canadian military personnel remained involved in the response, alongside the RCMP, as authorities prepared for a formal investigation.

Strong Winds Complicate Firefighting Efforts

Firefighters faced difficult conditions as strong winds swept across parts of Alberta on Saturday.

Gusts reaching approximately 100 kilometres per hour toppled trees, blew signs around and sent rubbish bins rolling through streets. The weather also contributed to concerns about the rapid spread of the fire.

By approximately 11pm, the Municipal District of Wainwright reported that the blaze was being contained and that property and critical infrastructure were protected.

The municipality confirmed that the fire had crossed the military base’s perimeter fence into the surrounding district. However, no evacuation order had been issued for nearby residents.

Emergency crews continued working to control the flames between the base and the town of Wainwright.

Canadian Leaders Respond to the Incident

Prime Minister Mark Carney acknowledged the serious incident in a statement, saying a major fire had occurred at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright.

He expressed support for the military personnel affected and their families.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith described the fire as a significant and tragic event affecting numerous military personnel. She also thanked first responders and those providing assistance.

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe said his province was sending assistance to Alberta, although he did not specify the resources being deployed.

General Jennie Carignan, Canada’s chief of the Defence Staff, said the armed forces were working closely with federal, provincial and local authorities. She said the welfare of military members, their families and the surrounding community remained the priority.

Alberta MP Dane Lloyd also reported that an explosion and fire had caused significant casualties.

Conservative opposition leader Pierre Poilievre said he had spoken with Carney and McGuinty to offer support. He urged residents to follow emergency instructions and keep roads clear for responding crews.

No Evacuation Order Issued for Wainwright Residents

The town of Wainwright, located near the military installation, has a population of approximately 6,600 to 7,000 people.

Despite the fire spreading beyond the base’s boundary, local authorities said residents had not been ordered to evacuate.

Officials continued monitoring the situation as firefighters worked to contain the blaze and protect nearby properties and infrastructure.

Fire Disrupts Advance Voting in Alberta

The incident also affected advance voting ahead of a referendum scheduled for Monday on whether Alberta should begin a process that could lead to independence from Canada.

Elections Alberta said two polling locations, in Lloydminster and Vermilion, closed earlier than planned on Saturday because of the disruption.

The ballots from the affected locations were transported securely, according to the election authority.

Military Training Base Under Investigation

Canadian Forces Base Wainwright is one of the country’s major military training installations and is used to prepare soldiers for combat operations.

The base houses the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre, which conducts realistic battlefield exercises, as well as the 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre.

Census data from 2021 recorded 1,310 military and civilian personnel stationed at the installation.

Authorities have not yet released a definitive account of how the explosion occurred or confirmed the final number of people killed and injured. The investigation is continuing as emergency services respond to the aftermath of the fire.
