British journalist David Knowles dies suddenly in Gibraltar while attending a Nations League football match between Gibraltar and Lichtenstein

The unexpected death of British journalist David Knowles, 32, is now the focus of an ongoing investigation in Gibraltar.

Knowles, who had traveled to the Mediterranean island to watch a lesser-known football match, tragically passed away, reportedly due to a suspected cardiac arrest.

He was in Gibraltar for a Nations League match between Gibraltar and Lichtenstein, which had only a small crowd of 680 people in attendance.

Family Responds as Investigation Continues

Knowles’ father, Peter Knowles, spoke from their family home in West London, confirming that his wife, Kaye, had flown to Gibraltar to be with authorities as they continue their investigation.

The family released a statement acknowledging the police’s initial findings, particularly noting that “there are no specific concerns at this time with regard to the death.”

His father emphasized the importance of the statement from the Royal Gibraltar Police and stressed the absence of any immediate threat or concern surrounding his son’s passing.

A Life Dedicated to Journalism

David Knowles was known not just for his love of sports but also for his dedication to journalism.

Born in London in 1991, he grew up in Ealing and later pursued studies in Biblical Studies at Durham University, followed by a degree in Interactive Journalism at City University.

He embarked on his professional journey in 2016, joining MailOnline as a social video journalist before moving on to create content for the World Economic Forum in 2017.

In 2020, Knowles joined The Telegraph as the deputy head of social media but soon gained recognition for his work on the popular podcast Ukraine: The Latest.

Launched on the day of the Russian invasion in February 2022, the podcast became a trusted source of information on the war, and Knowles’ commitment to telling the stories of Ukrainian citizens won him the Best News Podcast award at the Publisher Podcast Awards in June.

Counter-Terrorism Police Involvement

Due to the unique circumstances of Knowles’ sudden death in Gibraltar, the Royal Gibraltar Police requested assistance from Scotland Yard.

UK counter-terrorism police, known for handling international investigations, have been called in to support the investigation, although authorities continue to insist that there is no immediate cause for concern.

In a public statement, the Royal Gibraltar Police confirmed that His Majesty’s Coroner has been informed and a post-mortem will take place as part of the investigation.

A family liaison officer has also been appointed to assist the Knowles family during this difficult time.

A Legacy of Investigative Journalism

David Knowles’ untimely death has sent shockwaves through the journalism community.

Labour MP Andy Slaughter paid tribute to Knowles during a session in Parliament, highlighting the impact of his work and calling for greater support for investigative journalism.

Knowles’ Ukraine: The Latest podcast played a pivotal role in covering the war and informing the global public about the situation in Ukraine.

His colleagues, friends, and listeners alike are mourning the loss of a talented journalist, who, as his father put it, “loved life and lived it to the fullest.”
