As the sun set over Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, a significant meeting was underway. Nigeria’s Minister for State Petroleum Resources, Heineken Lokpobiri, took centre stage, addressing the Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria. Lokpobiri’s message was clear: the time to address fraudulent practices within the petroleum industry was now.

During the meeting, Lokpobiri highlighted his concerns about fraudulent activities within the industry, specifically focusing on metre adjustments and under dispensing. These sharp practices among operators have raised critical issues about the integrity of the industry. Lokpobiri warned oil marketers against these practices, reinforcing the need for transparency and accountability within the sector.

The Importance of the Downstream Sector

The Minister acknowledged the pivotal role of the upstream sector in the advancement of Nigeria’s petroleum industry. However, he also emphasized the importance of the downstream sector. He urged the creation of a favourable business environment through the implementation of policies that ease doing business. Lokpobiri also commended the marketers for their dedication to the downstream petroleum market and their service to Nigerians.

In his address, Lokpobiri stressed the need for continued collaboration between the government and the petroleum industry. He recognized the administration under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a critical ally in ensuring Nigeria’s progress, sustainable production, and energy accessibility for all citizens. Lokpobiri called for a stop to fraudulent activities and encouraged fostering equitable opportunities and mutually beneficial partnerships within the industry.
