In a recent chat, Black Leopards captain and former Mamelodi Sundowns player Thendo Mukumela shared his excitement about the club’s new coach, Maxwell Konadu.
Mukumela highlighted Konadu’s dedication to unlocking each player’s full potential and his meticulous approach to the game.
Konadu’s Arrival and Mission
Maxwell Konadu, formerly of Asante Kotoko and a past assistant coach for the Black Stars, joined the Leopards just in time for the 2024/25 Motsepe Foundation Championship season.
His mission is to turn the team’s fortunes around and restore their status as a top-flight club.
The Leopards faced relegation from the second tier in May 2023 but avoided dropping into amateur ranks by purchasing the status of All Stars.
Despite being relegated four times in recent decades and struggling in the premier division, the club’s management decided to invest in a fresh start rather than regrouping from the bottom.
Konadu’s Impact on the Field
In his first two games with the team, Konadu has led them to one win and one draw.
Mukumela, a defender, praised Konadu’s focus on precision and detailed play, especially starting attacks from the back.
Mukumela appreciates the coach’s insistence on accuracy and purpose in building play from defense.
Mukumela’s Thoughts on Konadu
“Coach Maxwell is fantastic at getting the best out of everyone,” Mukumela said.
“He insists on doing things correctly; if you’re going to do something, you better do it right.”
Mukumela noted that Konadu emphasizes controlling possession and building play from the back.
“He always tells me, ‘Thendo, if you’re going to do it, do it right,’” Mukumela added.
The Importance of Precision
Konadu’s focus on precision and fine details in finishing is seen as vital for the club’s success.
Mukumela believes this attention to detail is exactly what the Leopards need.
“He’s all about precision and perfect finishing.
He pays attention to every little detail, and that’s crucial for us,” Mukumela explained.
Confidence in the Technical Team
Mukumela also expressed strong confidence in the technical staff, including Konadu and assistant coach Solly Luvhengo.
He values their extensive experience and believes it will greatly benefit the team.
“With coach Solly and his extensive experience, we have a solid technical team.
We’re ready for a strong season,” Mukumela said.
Looking Forward
The Leopards are hopeful that Konadu’s strategic approach and renewed focus will lead them back to the top flight, the Betway Premiership.
Mukumela’s comments were made during the NJM Top 8 Challenge in Rabali, Thohoyandou, where Konadu was scouting for new talent.
This event, organized by businessman Nyambeni Jones Maphalaphathwa, aims to showcase emerging talent in the Thohoyandou area.
