Alexis Mac Allister has admitted he was presented with opportunities to leave Liverpool during the summer transfer window, while revealing his disappointment that the club have not offered him a new contract.
The Argentina international, 27, remains under contract at Anfield but has watched fellow midfielders Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch secure fresh deals.
Mac Allister said the situation has left him feeling “very, very sad”, although he remains committed to Liverpool.
Midfielder Reveals He Could Have Left Anfield
Mac Allister was asked how close he came to departing Liverpool during the summer and acknowledged that there were genuine possibilities.
“There was a chance,” he said, explaining that he had been informed the club was not currently in a position to offer him an improved contract.
The midfielder made clear that the decision had affected him emotionally, particularly because he believes he has consistently given everything to Liverpool since arriving from Brighton.
“Everyone can see I give 100 per cent for this football club every single day,” Mac Allister said.
“In training and games.”
Szoboszlai and Gravenberch Deals Bring Mixed Emotions
Mac Allister said he was genuinely pleased to see Szoboszlai and Gravenberch rewarded with new contracts, but admitted their renewals also highlighted his own uncertain position.
“I see Dominik and Ryan renew their contracts.
That makes me very happy because they deserve it but also at the same time it makes me very sad I didn’t get mine,” he said.
Despite his disappointment, Mac Allister insisted Liverpool supporters should not be concerned about his commitment.
He maintained that he would continue to perform at his highest level regardless of what happens with his contract.
“There is still time,” he said.
“The fans don’t have to worry because I will give 100 per cent until my very last day I am here.”
Mac Allister Still Believes Liverpool Is The Right Club
Although he acknowledged having options to leave, Mac Allister made it clear that his preference at present is to remain on Merseyside.
“There were options to leave this summer but I think right now I am in the right club,” he said.
The midfielder still has two seasons remaining on his current agreement, including the campaign now underway.
That means he could be approaching his 30th birthday when the deal eventually expires.
Asked whether Liverpool could change their position and offer him a new contract, Mac Allister admitted that possibility remains open.
“Maybe, I don’t know,” he said.
“It depends on how I perform during these years.”
Argentine Star Reflects On Successful Liverpool Spell
Mac Allister believes his first three years at Liverpool have already produced plenty to be proud of.
Since moving to Anfield, he has helped the club win the Premier League and Carabao Cup while also experiencing challenging periods with his teammates.
“In my three years at the club, I have done very good things, we went through difficult times and won a Premier League and Carabao Cup,” he said.
The World Cup winner added that he does not feel compelled to prove his worth all over again, although he accepts that his performances will ultimately influence Liverpool’s decision.
“I don’t think I have to prove something but of course I need to show my level,” Mac Allister said.
Mac Allister Makes His Affection For Liverpool Clear
Despite his frustration over the contract situation, Mac Allister stressed that his feelings towards Liverpool have not changed.
He said he loves the club, its supporters and the city, insisting he fully understands the significance of representing one of English football’s biggest teams.
“I love this club, I love being here, I love the fans,” he said.
Mac Allister added that some players can become accustomed to playing for a club over time, but that has not happened to him.
“As a player it sometimes happens when you are at a club for a long, long time and you don’t realise where you are. That doesn’t happen to me,” he said.
“I know this is an amazing club and this city is very special. I love being here.”
Iraola Offers Support Ahead Of Atletico Madrid Clash
Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola has also addressed Mac Allister’s situation ahead of Wednesday night’s Champions League meeting with Atletico Madrid.
The Basque manager made clear that the most important factor is Mac Allister’s desire to remain at Liverpool, while indicating that he holds the midfielder in high regard.
Liverpool will face Atletico in what will be Iraola’s first Champions League match as the club’s head coach.
Barcola Ready For A Bigger Role
Meanwhile, new Liverpool signing Bradley Barcola is in contention for increased playing time after making a substitute appearance during Friday night’s 2-0 victory at Ipswich.
