Anna Maxwell Martin reveals how financial terror gripped her and her daughters following the sudden death of ex-husband Roger Michell in 2021, impacting their mental health in the UK

Actress Anna Maxwell Martin, known for her roles in Motherland and Line of Duty, recently shared her experience navigating grief and financial uncertainty following the death of her ex-husband, filmmaker Roger Michell, in 2021.

Speaking candidly about the impact on her family, Martin revealed how she managed to support her daughters, Maggie, 15, and Nancy, 13, through the challenges of losing their father.

Coping with Financial Anxiety and Prioritizing Mental Wellbeing

Martin described the period after Michell’s passing as one of “financial terror,” adding that her first instinct was to safeguard her children’s mental health.

In an interview with BBC Women’s Hour, she explained, “My husband died three years ago, and things were really difficult in every aspect of our lives.”

Alongside the grief, Martin faced immediate, practical concerns regarding her children’s wellbeing and financial stability, which she admitted added another layer of stress during an already difficult time.

Lessons from Past Losses

Reflecting on her past experiences, Martin shared that losing her father, Ivan Martin, at 24 had unexpectedly prepared her for Michell’s sudden death.

“I’ve tried this road before, of grief, and sudden traumatic death,” she said.

Although heartbreaking, her prior experience helped her find resilience for the sake of her daughters.

“It was horrible to see my children walk that road, but I’m pretty gritty, and I thought, ‘I’ve just got to keep the motor chugging on.’”

The Challenge of Others’ Reactions to Grief

Martin spoke openly about the lack of empathy she and her daughters encountered after Michell’s passing.

In a recent interview with The Sunday Times, she expressed frustration over acquaintances who avoided acknowledging their loss.

She noted how some people crossed the road to avoid them or acted as though nothing had happened.

“People are very bad at acknowledging pain or death or difficulty,” she reflected, wondering if it was a cultural issue.

She emphasized the importance of asking others how they’re feeling or simply showing they care.

Remembering Roger and the Importance of Family Memories

For Martin, keeping her ex-husband’s memory alive has been essential.

She encourages her daughters to talk about their father, and they often watch archived footage of him to feel close.

Martin explained how valuable it is that her daughters have access to Michell’s recordings, noting, “With my dad, I forgot very quickly what he sounded like.

My girls won’t have that ‘Oh my God!’ moment; they can see him whenever they want.”

Moving Forward with Support and New Beginnings

Since 2022, Martin has been dating record executive Ferdy Unger-Hamilton, and she acknowledges the importance of strong friendships and family as she and her daughters heal.

With the support of her loved ones and an unwavering dedication to her family, Martin continues to move forward, balancing work and family life as she promotes her latest show, Until I Kill You.
