Airports Company South Africa ensures uninterrupted jet fuel supply at OR Tambo International despite refinery fire in Gauteng

A recent fire at the National Petroleum Refiners of South Africa (NATREF) refinery has prompted the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) to implement immediate measures to ensure jet fuel availability at OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA).

Here’s a breakdown of how ACSA is addressing the challenge.

Fire Sparks Concerns Over Fuel Supply

The fire, which occurred on January 4, 2025, disrupted operations at NATREF’s Crude Distillation Unit (CDU), raising concerns about jet fuel supply to ORTIA.

NATREF is working to restore the CDU, which is expected to resume full functionality by February 21, 2025.

ACSA’s Eight-Day Reserve and Proactive Measures

ACSA reassured stakeholders on Sunday that it has enough jet fuel reserves to sustain operations at ORTIA until January 20, 2025.

However, with potential shortages looming before the next major delivery, ACSA, NATREF, and the Fuels Industry Association of Southern Africa (FIASA) are coordinating efforts to mitigate risks.

Key mitigation strategies include:

  • Fuel Deliveries: A shipment of 17,000m³ of jet fuel was expected to arrive at ORTIA by January 12, 2025. Additionally, a pipeline injection of 31,000m³ from Durban is scheduled for January 14, with delivery anticipated by January 27.
  • Increased Rail Transport: Rail deliveries from Durban and Matola, Mozambique, are being prioritized to boost fuel volumes at ORTIA.
  • Alternative Sourcing: Fuel is being sourced from other airports and injected directly into NATREF to fill the gap.

Addressing the Short-Term Gap

The anticipated gap in fuel supply between January 20 and January 27 is being carefully managed.

ACSA and FIASA, in collaboration with NATREF and other industry partners, are developing solutions to minimize disruptions.

A progress update is expected on January 14, 2025.

Assurance to Airlines and Passengers

ACSA has emphasized its commitment to maintaining normal airport operations and ensuring an uninterrupted fuel supply.

Airlines, passengers, and stakeholders have been assured that transparent communication and immediate interventions are the top priorities.

ACSA’s spokesperson stated, “We are dedicated to keeping the public informed as we closely monitor the situation.

All necessary steps are being taken to safeguard uninterrupted travel.”

Staying Updated

Passengers flying to or from OR Tambo International are encouraged to stay informed about potential updates.

ACSA will provide further information on January 14, 2025.
