Mamelodi Sundowns fans were treated to a dominant 4-0 victory over Richards Bay in the MTN8 quarter-finals over the weekend — but there were a few notable absentees that had supporters asking questions.

Where were Lucas Ribeiro Costa, Peter Shalulile, and Khuliso Mudau?

While the team delivered a confident performance at Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville on Sunday, the missing trio sparked plenty of speculation.

Coach Cardoso Breaks His Silence on Player Absences

After the match, Sundowns’ head coach Miguel Cardoso addressed the absence of his key players and tried to calm some of the growing rumours.

“All of those situations are being handled internally by the club,” Cardoso said.

“I’m sure everything will come to light at the right time. I understand where things stand with Lucas, Peter, and even Thapelo Morena, who wasn’t here today because of a minor injury.”

Ribeiro did train with the squad during the week, so his absence wasn’t injury-related.

Meanwhile, Shalulile and Mudau’s situations appear to be more complex — and possibly connected to transfer or contract issues.

Shalulile Eyes the Exit as Mudau Holds Off on New Deal

Peter Shalulile, a key figure in Sundowns’ attacking line in recent seasons, has reportedly been linked with a potential move to Tunisian giants Esperance.

After limited minutes under Cardoso last season, it’s no surprise he’s exploring other options.

As for Mudau, the right-back is yet to agree to a contract extension with the club.

Negotiations are still ongoing, and until that’s sorted, his future remains uncertain.

Cardoso Stays Focused Despite Disruptions

The coach admitted he would prefer to start the new season with a full, stable squad, but insisted that he’s prepared to adapt.

“It’s not ideal, but it doesn’t stop us from doing our job.

My focus is on finding solutions, not getting stuck in the problems,” Cardoso said.

“I have faith that those managing the club will sort things out in due time.”

He also hinted at the need for new signings, saying coaches always want reinforcements as early as possible when preparing for a new campaign.

Are Sundowns About to Lose Two of Their Biggest Names?

The big question now is whether Sundowns will be able to hold on to Mudau and Shalulile — or if fans should brace for change.

With contract talks and transfer whispers in full swing, all eyes will be on the club’s next move.
