A 38-year-old Irish woman has been formally charged in connection with an alleged sexual assault on a young Swedish tourist at a holiday hotel in Magaluf, Spain.
Prosecutors are seeking an 18-month prison sentence if she is found guilty.
Alleged Incident in Hotel Steam Bath
The alleged assault took place on June 3, around 6pm, at the four-star Hotel Martinique.
Court documents indicate the woman, who was 37 at the time, allegedly touched the 18-year-old man’s genitals without his consent in a Turkish steam bath.
The indictment states she “took advantage of the fact that no one else was present” before the man told her “No, no, no” and left.
Arrest, Bail, and Ongoing Investigation
The Irish woman was initially detained and spent a night in a police cell before being released on bail.
She was permitted to return home pending the ongoing criminal investigation.
Alongside the prison term, prosecutors are also seeking a ban on working with minors for three-and-a-half years and a payment of £440 in compensation to the victim.
Court costs would also be imposed if convicted.
How the Alleged Assault Unfolded
According to police reports, the Swedish tourist was already in the hotel sauna when the Irish woman entered and started a conversation with him.
She then reportedly swam in the nearby hotel pool before following him into the Turkish steam bath.
Hotel staff were alerted, and police were called after the alleged incident.
Confession and Legal Defense
Sources confirmed that the woman admitted to touching the man’s genitals when she appeared in court the day after her arrest, although she insisted it was a misunderstanding.
She claimed she believed the man was interested in her after their brief conversation.
Her Palma-based lawyer, Joan Arbos, has previously argued that no crime had taken place and planned to request the case be discontinued.
Court Proceedings and Possible Plea Deal
Two police officers, the alleged victim, and the woman are expected to testify.
While no trial date has been set, authorities have not ruled out a pre-trial hearing to explore a possible plea bargain.
In Spain, prison sentences under two years are typically suspended for first-time offenders, though this depends on the court’s discretion.
Background and Context
The woman, who was born in Brazil and now resides in County Cork, Ireland, was with her husband when arrested.
Early reports described the Swedish man as 20, but the indictment lists him as 18 at the time.
The Civil Guard confirmed the incident shortly after her arrest, stating the victim was visibly upset when authorities arrived.
