Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou faces a significant setback as one of his key defenders, Cristian Romero, is expected to be sidelined for the next six weeks due to a fresh muscle injury.
This news adds pressure on the Spurs boss, who has already been feeling the heat following his team’s recent disappointing form.
Injury Blow for Spurs
Tottenham’s loss to Chelsea on Sunday, a 4-3 defeat after leading 2-0, has left the team struggling just above the bottom half of the Premier League table.
Romero, who had only just returned to the starting lineup after recovering from an earlier injury, was forced off the pitch within 15 minutes of the game.
The defender picked up the injury while attempting a backheel flick in his own penalty area.
Key Matches Ahead Without Romero
Reports from Argentine journalist Gaston Edul indicate that Romero has suffered a new muscle issue, ruling him out for the remainder of 2024.
The 26-year-old is set to miss crucial league matches against Liverpool and Newcastle, along with next week’s Carabao Cup quarter-final against Manchester United.
Furthermore, Romero faces a race against time to recover for Tottenham’s north London derby against Arsenal on January 15.
Van de Ven Injury Concern
In addition to Romero’s injury, Spurs are also concerned about his centre-back partner, Micky van de Ven, who was substituted during the Chelsea defeat.
However, the club is hopeful that van de Ven has avoided a serious injury and will be available for upcoming matches.
Romero Criticizes Club’s Investment Amid Struggles
After the defeat to Chelsea, Romero stopped to speak with a reporter and seemed to direct blame towards Tottenham’s chairman, Daniel Levy, for the club’s struggles under Postecoglou this season.
Romero pointed out the investment made by other top clubs, like Manchester City, Liverpool, and Chelsea, and hinted that Tottenham’s lack of squad depth was hindering their progress.
“Manchester City competes every year, you see how Liverpool strengthens its squad, Chelsea strengthens their squad, doesn’t do well, strengthens again, and now they’re seeing results. Those are the things to imitate,” Romero said.
He also expressed frustration with the constant changes at the club, including personnel changes, without addressing the root causes of their issues.
Support for Postecoglou
Despite the mounting pressure on Postecoglou, Romero was quick to show his support for the Australian coach.
“He’s a great coach. We saw it in the first season. In this second one, we’ve suffered a lot of injuries,” he said.
The defender emphasized that the team’s staff is still working hard, and he and his teammates are happy with the football being played, even amidst a tough period for the club.
As Tottenham looks to rebound, Romero’s absence will be felt, but with backing for Postecoglou, the team will aim to move forward quickly and recover from their recent setbacks.
