Imagine a young boy named Cobus Wiese, just ten years old, dashing around his family’s farm in the Northern Cape.
Back in 2007, while Jake White was leading South Africa to their second Rugby World Cup victory, Cobus was busy tackling his older brother Jasper and living the carefree life of a child.
Fast forward to today, and that same boy is on the brink of his debut season in the United Rugby Championship (URC) under the guidance of none other than Jake White.
A New Chapter at the Bulls
Cobus is now preparing to kick off his season with the Bulls, who will face Edinburgh Rugby at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday, September 28, at 15:00.
As a nearly two-meter tall, 116-kilogram powerhouse, he’s ready to bring an added physicality to the team.
Reflecting on his upbringing, he shares, “Jasper and I didn’t grow up in a gym. We worked on the farm.”
His background has shaped his approach to the game, and he’s enthusiastic about stepping into a storied team that has consistently made the URC playoffs.
Excitement and Growth
“I’m excited,” Cobus says. “It’s always good to be able to step into a successful team like the Bulls.
I think Jake White is an incredible rugby brain, and I came back to South Africa with the desire to grow my game even more.”
He appreciates the caliber of players around him and sees his role as a contributor to the team’s success this season.
“From the start, it was really easy to settle in here at Loftus. It felt like I’d been a part of this team for years,” he adds, emphasizing the warmth of his new environment.
The Importance of Family
Cobus’s strong family ties are a central part of who he is.
He shares a deep bond with his brother Jasper, and they even welcomed children around the same time.
“We’re a very close family, and we’ve been through a lot together.
If Jasper and I don’t talk every day, I’ll phone him twice the next day. That’s how close we are,” he explains.
Cobus attributes this closeness to the values instilled in them by their parents, who may not have been able to provide all the latest gadgets but prioritized good morals.
Family at the Heart of Decision-Making
Cobus’s decision to return to South Africa after a successful stint with the Sale Sharks was largely motivated by family.
“Our decision to come back to South Africa was mainly based around family.
Last July, our daughter arrived, and family is first for me.
Seeing my daughter in the arms of her grandparents is worth more than any paycheck,” he shares, underscoring that nothing compares to family time.
Resilience Through Adversity
Cobus’s perspective on rugby and life has been profoundly influenced by the challenges his family has faced.
In 2019, they experienced the heartbreaking loss of their sister in a tragic accident.
“It was unexpected to lose our sister at 29, but we believe she’s in a better place, and that gives you comfort,” he reflects.
This tragedy brought the family closer together and reinforced his belief that one’s identity shouldn’t be tied to rugby results.
“The great thing about rugby is that you get another chance next weekend. The season is long,” he notes.
Aiming for Glory
As Cobus Wiese, the once playful farm boy, prepares to take the field this season, he’s determined to help his new team, the Bulls, secure that elusive United Rugby Championship crown.
With a mix of talent, determination, and a strong sense of family, he’s ready to tackle whatever comes his way.
What’s next for this rugby powerhouse? Only time will tell, but the journey is sure to be exciting.
