Officials from the United States and Canada are set to mark the completion of a major new bridge linking the two countries, with the project expected to transform cross-border transportation and strengthen trade connections despite growing tensions over tariffs.
The Gordie Howe International Bridge is scheduled to open to traffic on Monday, creating a new route across the Detroit River between Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan.
Opening Ceremony Takes Place Without Joint Celebration
A ceremony is being held in Windsor, Ontario, on Friday to recognise the completion of the long-awaited bridge.
The event was originally planned as a joint celebration featuring officials from both countries on the bridge deck.
However, Canada decided against holding a combined gathering after US President Donald Trump announced a new 50% tariff on Canadian goods entering the United States earlier this week.
Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens expressed disappointment over the strained relationship between the neighbouring countries but said he hoped trade relations would improve.
“It’s regretful that we’re at this point with our trade relationship,” Dilkens said, adding that officials remain hopeful for stronger cooperation in the future.
Bridge Expected to Transform Border Trade
The new crossing arrives at a crucial point for North American commerce.
More than 70% of Canada’s exports are sent to the United States, making America its most important trading partner.
Detroit is also the busiest US-Canada border crossing for truck traffic, according to the US Department of Transportation, meaning the new bridge could play a major role in easing congestion and improving supply chain movement.
End of Long-Term Ambassador Bridge Monopoly
For nearly 100 years, the privately owned Ambassador Bridge has been the only major route available for commercial trucks travelling between Detroit and Windsor.
The opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge will introduce competition to the heavily used corridor and provide businesses and travellers with another option for crossing the border.
Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield said the bridge would be extremely important for the region’s economy, although she avoided directly addressing whether the project had become caught up in recent political disputes between the two countries.
Sheffield said she had originally been invited to participate in a joint US-Canada event before plans changed.
Bridge Named After Canadian Hockey Legend
The new crossing carries the name of Gordie Howe, one of Canada’s most celebrated hockey players who spent much of his legendary NHL career with the Detroit Red Wings.
Howe, who died in 2016, remains a beloved figure on both sides of the border due to his impact on hockey and his connection to Detroit.
Construction on the bridge began in 2018, but the project faced delays, including challenges caused by the global economic slowdown during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Six-Lane Structure Built Above Detroit River
The Gordie Howe International Bridge stretches approximately 2.4 kilometres and rises 46 metres above the Detroit River at its highest point.
The six-lane crossing is designed to accommodate commercial vehicles, passenger traffic and future transportation needs between the two nations.
Officials also confirmed that pedestrians and cyclists will eventually be allowed to use the bridge at no cost, provided they have the required identification documents.
Canada Funded Construction of Multi-Billion Dollar Project
Canada covered the cost of building the bridge, with the total investment estimated at $6.4 billion.
Under a recent agreement, Canada will share a portion of toll revenue generated from the crossing with the US federal government for 15 years.
Michigan will also receive a share of toll income, although its payments will begin only after Canada recovers its construction costs — a process expected to take several decades.
New Crossing Opens During Complicated Political Moment
Although the Gordie Howe International Bridge represents decades of planning and cooperation between the two countries, its opening comes during a challenging period in US-Canada relations.
Officials on both sides continue to emphasise the importance of trade and economic cooperation, while hoping the new bridge will serve as a symbol of long-term partnership despite current disagreements.
