Johannesburg Moves to Reopen Thuso House After Settling R3.4 Million Debt

The City of Johannesburg says it is taking steps to reopen its Thuso House customer service centre in Braamfontein after paying more than R3.4 million that led to the facility’s temporary closure.

Municipal officials confirmed on Friday that the outstanding amount had been settled and that arrangements were being finalized to restore operations at the centre.

Administrative Error Linked to Court Action

The disruption occurred after the execution of a court order resulted in the temporary removal of certain office equipment from the building earlier this week.

City Manager Floyd Brink said the issue originated from an administrative error dating back more than a decade. He added that the required payment has now been made to resolve the matter.

According to Brink, delays in settling the debt were caused by challenges within the municipality’s administrative systems, which have since been addressed.

City Working With Sheriff to Resume Operations

The municipality said it is cooperating with the sheriff to facilitate the return of equipment and complete the operational requirements needed before Thuso House can reopen to the public.

Officials indicated that efforts are continuing to ensure the customer service centre resumes normal operations as soon as possible.

Residents Urged to Use Alternative Service Channels

While the Braamfontein facility remains closed, residents have been encouraged to access municipal services through alternative platforms.

These include the city’s e-Joburg online portal, the CoJ CSD mobile application and regional customer support via email.

Customers requiring in-person assistance have been advised to visit the Eureka House, Vrededorp or Reuven customer service centres in Region F until Thuso House reopens.

Municipality Says Service Delivery Has Continued

The City of Johannesburg maintained that the temporary closure has not affected overall municipal service delivery.

Officials reiterated their commitment to restoring full operations at Thuso House and minimizing inconvenience to residents while final administrative arrangements are completed.
