Lady Louise Windsor has added another milestone to a landmark week after receiving the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award from her father, Prince Edward, just one day after graduating from the University of St Andrews.

The award ceremony took place at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, where the Duke of Edinburgh hosted a reception celebrating young people from Scotland and northern England who had completed the programme established by his father, Prince Philip, in 1956.

Prince Edward Presents Award During Special Ceremony

As patron of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Prince Edward personally presented the Gold Award to his daughter during the event.

Lady Louise was joined by her mother, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, and her boyfriend, Felix da Silva-Clamp, who watched the ceremony alongside other guests. Following the presentation, the family listened as Prince Edward addressed the award recipients.

Graduation Celebrations Continue After St Andrews Success

The royal engagement followed Lady Louise’s graduation from the University of St Andrews, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature and International Relations.

Her parents and Felix da Silva-Clamp were present to celebrate the achievement as she completed her studies at the Scottish university, which is also the alma mater of the Prince and Princess of Wales.

To mark the occasion, new family portraits of Lady Louise with the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh were released, including a photograph of the graduate holding her degree certificate.

Young Royal Preparing for Gap Year

Rather than immediately pursuing a career or taking on additional royal duties, Lady Louise is expected to spend the coming year on a gap year.

According to Buckingham Palace, her plans include a combination of employment, volunteer work and travel while she considers her long-term future. Palace officials have not provided further details about her career aspirations.

Gap years have become a familiar tradition within the Royal Family, with several senior royals taking time between education and full-time responsibilities.

Royal Family Members Have Previously Taken Similar Path

Prince William spent his gap year undertaking military preparation exercises, volunteering overseas and travelling before beginning his studies at St Andrews, where he met the Princess of Wales.

Catherine also took time before university to study abroad, volunteer in Chile and participate in sailing expeditions.

Meanwhile, Prince Harry spent part of his gap year working on a remote cattle station in Queensland, Australia, gaining practical experience before beginning his military career.

Lady Louise Maintains Low-Profile Public Image

Despite being 17th in the line of succession, Lady Louise has earned a reputation for leading a relatively private life and has previously worked a part-time job at a local garden centre.

Friends and acquaintances have described her as humble and down-to-earth, qualities that have contributed to public interest in her future.

Although some royal observers have suggested she could eventually join the ranks of working members of the Royal Family, no decision has been announced regarding any future official role.

Parents Chose Private Upbringing for Their Children

Prince Edward and Sophie chose not to style Lady Louise or her younger brother, James, Earl of Wessex, with the HRH titles available to them at birth, believing they should have the freedom to decide their own paths as adults.

Lady Louise has also overcome health challenges from infancy. Born prematurely, she underwent treatment for esotropia, an eye condition commonly associated with premature birth.

Following corrective surgeries, her vision fully recovered, and Sophie’s experience inspired her advocacy work on preventable blindness.

As Lady Louise begins her gap year after completing university and receiving one of the Duke of Edinburgh Award’s highest honours, she now enters a new chapter while considering her future beyond higher education.
