When we think of the Springboks’ most iconic props, Trevor Nyakane’s name definitely stands out.
Nyakane, known for his impressive stature and influence on the field, has left a significant mark with his 68 Test appearances.
He played a crucial role in the World Cup victories of 2019 and 2023 and was instrumental in the Springboks’ series win over the British & Irish Lions in 2021.
Transitioning Roles and New Beginnings
As the Springboks embark on a new four-year World Cup cycle, they’re naturally focusing on integrating some fresh talent into their squad.
This shift means that Nyakane has seen less action recently.
Although he did come on as a substitute in the Test against Portugal, he was soon released from the camp and has since been playing with the Sharks in the Currie Cup.
Limited Opportunities Ahead
There were hopes that Nyakane might make a return for the final two Rugby Championship Tests against Argentina.
However, it looks like Thomas du Toit and Vincent Koch will take on the tighthead prop duties, with Frans Malherbe getting a break.
With only three Tests left in 2024 after the Rugby Championship, it seems unlikely that Nyakane will be called back for the end-of-year tour unless there are injuries among the other props.
The Future of Nyakane with the Springboks
Despite the uncertainty, the Springboks are well aware of Nyakane’s value as a reliable workhorse and an excellent backup option.
However, there’s a chance we might have seen the last of this likable front rower in the green and gold, which would be a bittersweet end to his remarkable career.
