Ann Freeman, the mother of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy and Lauren Bessette, had a deep intuition when it came to her daughters flying with John F. Kennedy Jr. She always insisted that he never take both of them on his flights at the same time.
However, fate didn’t align with Ann’s warnings.
On July 16, 1999, both Carolyn, 33, and Lauren, 34, were aboard JFK Jr.’s plane when it tragically crashed into the Atlantic, claiming all lives on board.
The flight was intended to first drop off Lauren at Martha’s Vineyard, then continue to Hyannis Port for a family wedding the next day.
According to the new book *JFK Jr.: An Intimate Oral Biography*, authored by PEOPLE’s Liz McNeil and RoseMarie Terenzi, Ann Freeman was deeply distressed about her daughters boarding JFK Jr.’s Piper Saratoga in 1999.
She had expressed her fears to him, adamantly warning against flying both her girls together.
RoseMarie Terenzi, recalling Ann’s state of mind in the book, described her as panicked and angry following the tragic deaths.
The grief was compounded by disbelief and shock over losing both daughters in such a sudden and preventable accident.
In the aftermath of the crash, despite the young pilot’s lack of experience and the challenging conditions, blame often fell on Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy.
She was criticized for alleged vanity, superficiality, and behavior that some described as contributing to the crash.
Carolyn had reportedly expressed concerns to friends and family about JFK Jr.’s piloting skills.
According to Maureen Callahan’s book *Ask Not: The Kennedys and the Women They Destroyed*, she doubted his patience, diligence, and ability to focus as a pilot.
On the night of the fatal flight, other pilots had warned JFK Jr. about deteriorating weather conditions, suggesting he delay his flight.
Despite these warnings, JFK Jr. proceeded without a filed flight plan and cut off communication with air traffic control shortly after takeoff.
Tragic Flight
Less than 20 minutes into the flight, the Piper Saratoga, carrying Carolyn and Lauren, entered a fatal descent path.
It was on a collision course with a commercial American Airlines flight, prompting emergency messages from the airliner’s pilots to ground control.
Loss of Control
Despite worsening visibility, JFK Jr. did not engage autopilot or maintain close proximity to the coastline.
Instead, he veered out over the Atlantic Ocean, where he lost orientation in the night sky’s haze.
The plane entered a fatal spiral, plummeting into the ocean at a steep rate.
Investigative Findings
Following the investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board, JFK Jr. was deemed solely responsible for the avoidable tragedy.
His failure to navigate the flight safely in adverse conditions led to the fatal crash.
In 2001, Ann Freeman reportedly reached a wrongful-death settlement against JFK Jr.’s estate, acknowledging the devastating loss of Carolyn and Lauren Bessette.
