Liam Payne, former One Direction member, tragically passed away last month after a fall from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires.
Argentine prosecutors have now released details surrounding his final moments, revealing a mix of drugs and alcohol in his system leading up to his death.
Toxicology Results Reveal Drug Use
In a statement, prosecutors confirmed that toxicology results showed traces of alcohol, cocaine, and a prescription antidepressant in Payne’s body.
These substances were present not only at the time of his fatal fall but also in the hours leading up to it.
His family has been informed of the findings, which paint a somber picture of Payne’s state during his last days.
Cause of Death: Fall from Balcony
Payne was found dead on October 16, after falling from the third-floor balcony of the CasaSur Hotel.
An autopsy confirmed he died from multiple trauma, including internal and external bleeding caused by the fall.
Prosecutors have ruled out suicide or foul play, stating the injuries were consistent with a fall from such a height.
There were also indications that Payne might not have been fully conscious or aware when he fell.
Charges Laid Against Three Individuals
The investigation has led to three individuals being charged with supplying Payne with narcotics.
One suspect, who had accompanied him during his stay, faces charges of both drug supply and abandoning a person in a vulnerable state.
Another is a hotel employee accused of providing cocaine to Payne twice during his time at the hotel.
A third person is also charged with supplying drugs shortly before the tragic incident.
Body Repatriated and Industry Scrutiny
Payne’s family, including his father Geoff Payne, arranged for his body to be flown back to the UK the day after the toxicology report was released.
The tragedy has sparked wider conversations about the pressures of fame, particularly in the music industry, and whether there is adequate care for the mental health of young stars.
Payne had previously opened up about his struggles with substance abuse and the pressures of rising to fame at a young age.
Liam Payne’s Legacy
The death of the 31-year-old singer has left fans, former bandmates, and family in mourning.
Payne’s journey to fame began when he first auditioned for The X Factor at the age of 14, eventually joining One Direction in 2010.
Over the next six years, the band became one of the biggest names in music, selling millions of albums and touring the world.
Although Payne later pursued a solo career, his success was overshadowed by personal struggles.
Payne leaves behind his young son, Bear, with former partner Cheryl Tweedy of Girls Aloud.
His untimely death has prompted reflection on the pressures that come with stardom and the importance of mental health care for those in the spotlight.
