Tony Leon Responds to Nomination for South Africa’s Ambassador to the US After Ebrahim Rasool’s Expulsion

Former Democratic Alliance (DA) leader and South African Ambassador to Argentina, Tony Leon, has weighed in on speculation surrounding his potential appointment as South Africa’s next ambassador to the United States.

Despite being nominated by DA federal chairperson Helen Zille, Leon has made it clear that he is not actively pursuing the role.

Speaking to eNCA, Leon chuckled at the idea, stating, “I am honored to be considered by someone like Helen Zille, but I am not looking for a job.”

His response comes in light of the recent expulsion of Ebrahim Rasool, the former ambassador to the US, after his controversial remarks about American policies and leadership.

The Controversy Surrounding Ebrahim Rasool

Rasool was declared persona non grata by the United States after he made critical remarks about the US and its then-president, Donald Trump, during a virtual address at the Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection (MISTRA).

As a result, his diplomatic immunities were revoked, and he was ordered to leave the country by March 21.

Upon his return to South Africa, Rasool received a hero’s welcome at Cape Town International Airport, where he was greeted by members of the ANC, SACP, and Cosatu.

However, Leon criticized the former ambassador’s actions, suggesting that his conduct was more in line with that of an activist rather than a diplomat.

“Whether or not the US government’s decision was justified is another matter, but his rally at the airport was certainly not the behavior of a diplomat representing their country abroad,” Leon remarked.

South Africa’s Diplomatic Challenges

Leon also pointed out that South Africa’s strained relationship with the US is largely due to domestic policy decisions.

Earlier that year, President Trump had cut aid funding to South Africa, citing concerns over land expropriation policies.

Additionally, Trump had offered asylum to Afrikaners who claimed to be under attack in South Africa, with over 70,000 expressing interest in relocating to the US.

Given these diplomatic tensions, the question of Rasool’s replacement has become even more significant.

Zille believes that South Africa must tread carefully in its dealings with the US, as alienating one of the country’s biggest trade partners could have long-term economic consequences.

Why Helen Zille Nominated Tony Leon

During a Human Rights Day event, Zille spoke to journalists about the importance of appointing a strong and experienced diplomat to the position.

“We know that Trump is inward-looking and wants to put America first.

He is not interested in engaging with countries that he perceives as undermining US interests.

It is in South Africa’s best interest to maintain strong diplomatic ties with the US,” she explained.

When asked who she thought would be the ideal candidate, Zille immediately put forward Tony Leon’s name.

“Well, if I had to choose, I would choose somebody like Tony Leon.

He has already been an ambassador before, he is incredibly well-read, and he understands foreign policy at the highest level. That’s the kind of person we need,” she stated.

Who Should Be South Africa’s Next Ambassador?

As speculation continues about who will replace Rasool, many are wondering who the best candidate would be for this crucial diplomatic role.

Should it be an experienced politician like Leon, or should the government look elsewhere for fresh leadership?
