Tom Brady has made a significant move, appointing Pete Carroll as the new head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders.
The 73-year-old Carroll has agreed to a three-year deal, with the option for a fourth season, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Brady’s Initial Choice Was Ben Johnson
Initially, Brady was keen to bring in former Detroit Lions head coach Ben Johnson for the role.
However, Johnson opted for a new challenge with the Chicago Bears, leaving Carroll as the Raiders’ top choice.
Carroll’s Return After a Year Out
After stepping down from his position with the Seattle Seahawks, Pete Carroll took a year off from coaching in the NFL.
During his time away, he served as an advisor with the Seahawks, reflecting on his past success.
Carroll is best known for leading the Seahawks to a Super Bowl victory in 2013, where they defeated the Denver Broncos 43-8 at MetLife Stadium.
This remains Seattle’s only Super Bowl win to date.
Carroll Inherits a Challenging Situation in Las Vegas
Carroll is stepping into a challenging situation with the Raiders.
His predecessor, Antonio Pierce, was fired after a disastrous 4-13 season, leaving the team in a tough spot.
The Raiders now have the sixth overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, and Carroll’s primary task will be rebuilding the roster, including addressing key questions about the quarterback position.
The New GM and Draft Plans
Carroll will collaborate with the newly appointed general manager, John Spytek, who left his post as assistant general manager at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to join the Raiders.
Spytek, 44, is replacing Tom Telesco, who was also dismissed after just one year.
Together, Carroll and Spytek will decide how to use the sixth overall pick in the draft, which is expected to be pivotal for the Raiders’ future.
Quarterback Dilemma and Draft Prospects
One of the biggest challenges facing Carroll and his team is the quarterback position.
The Raiders are likely to miss out on top prospects like Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward unless they trade up, and filling this gap will be crucial to the team’s success moving forward.
Brady, who also holds a minority stake in the Raiders, played an active role in overseeing the appointment of both Carroll and Spytek, with whom he has a close connection, having been college teammates at Michigan.
The team’s next moves will be under intense scrutiny as they look to rebuild and contend in the highly competitive NFL landscape.
