A tragic accident in Dundee, Oregon, has left a community heartbroken after an 18-year-old girl was killed while sledding.
Lily Vanderhoff, who had recently graduated from Newberg High School, was riding a plastic sled being towed by an ATV on Thursday afternoon.
The Accident
The accident took place at 2:38 p.m. on Northeast Hagey Road, a quiet, snow-covered street.
Lily’s sled veered off course, crossing the road and crashing into a metal mailbox on a wooden post.
Despite the best efforts of witnesses to assist her, the injuries she sustained were too severe, and she tragically passed away before paramedics arrived at 3:22 p.m.
A Community Mourns
Lily’s family and friends are devastated by the sudden loss.
Her brother-in-law, Chris Logan, has set up a fundraiser to help with funeral expenses, describing Lily as someone who brought “so much love and light” into their lives.
Her death has deeply affected not only her family but the entire local community of Newberg, where she was well-known.
Support for Her Family
The local school district has provided counseling services for students and parents, offering support in the wake of the young woman’s death.
A grieving local resident, Robert Moxley, who witnessed the crash, shared his sorrow, acknowledging that sledding accidents are common but none could have prepared them for the heartbreaking event.
A Call for Caution
In the wake of this tragedy, Moxley shared a simple but important message for others: “Try to wear your helmet, if you can,” he urged. “Think about stuff like this happening.
If you have a friend or family member, tell them you love them. It might be the last time you see them.”
