A heartbreaking incident unfolded in Umlazi, KZN, on Monday, 6 January 2025, when a one-year-old child was fatally shot.
The child’s teen mother, aged 17, was initially involved in the situation, with reports indicating that the baby was inside the house while she was outside sweeping.
However, a deeper investigation revealed more troubling details, leading to her arrest.
Teen Mom’s Initial Claim
At first, the teen mother seemed unaware of the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.
She reported to authorities that she had been sweeping outside while the child was in the house.
According to the initial account, she heard a gunshot but didn’t see anyone around.
When she entered the house, she found her son in a pool of blood with a gunshot wound to his forehead.
There was no sign of anyone leaving the home.
The Truth Behind the Tragedy
Further investigation by police revealed a much darker story.
It was uncovered that the mother had been playing with a firearm when the tragic accident occurred.
KZN police spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, confirmed that the teen mom unintentionally shot and killed her son while handling the gun.
“It is suspected that the mother was playing with a gun when a bullet accidentally went off, resulting in the child’s death,” he said.
Court Appearance to Shed Light
The situation is expected to become clearer when the mother faces court on Thursday, 9 January 2025.
According to reports, she will be charged with murder, though it is still being investigated as a potential accidental shooting.
Colonel Netshiunda assured the public that more details would emerge after the court appearance, and the authorities are working with other relevant departments to thoroughly investigate the incident.
Legal Proceedings and Community Reaction
The case has already sparked public outrage and concern, especially regarding the handling of firearms by someone so young.
While the teen mother’s actions appear to have been unintentional, the loss of life has left the community in shock.
Investigators continue to gather statements from involved parties and will present a full case to the court.
