Statutory rape: Rapist, 20, sentenced after impregnating a 15-year-old girl

On 10 February 2022, the Department of Social Development informed Warrant Officer Melany Olifant, of the De Aar FCS Unit, about a 15-year-old girl who had given birth.

“The investigating officer instituted an investigation into the pregnancy of the victim. The victim confessed to the investigating officer, and directed her to the 20-year-old accused,” said Captain Olebogeng Tawana.

The accused – who is not named to protect the identity of the victim – was arrested and charged with statutory rape.

On Monday, the De Aar court handed the 20-year-old a six years sentence, which is suspended for five years.

“The accused’s name was ordered to be entered in the National Sex Offenders Register and he was also declared unfit to possess a firearm,” said the police spokesperson.
