A horrifying crash on Manhattan’s FDR Drive has left a young woman dead and a man critically injured after their Tesla collided with a guardrail and erupted into flames.
The devastating accident unfolded early Tuesday morning, turning a routine drive into a fatal disaster.
High-Speed Impact Leads to Fiery Wreck
The crash took place just after 2:30 a.m. near the 70th Street exit, when the Tesla, reportedly speeding at over 120 mph, lost control and slammed into the guardrail.
The force of the impact was so intense that the vehicle flipped over and instantly burst into flames, turning the highway into a scene of destruction.
Driver Ejected, Passenger Severely Injured
The 26-year-old female driver was violently thrown from the car upon impact.
First responders pronounced her dead at the scene.
Meanwhile, her male passenger, also 26, suffered serious injuries and was rushed to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital – Cornell.
Despite his critical condition, he was later reported to be stable.
Witnesses Describe the Shocking Scene
Eyewitnesses recounted the terrifying moments before and after the crash.
One local resident told reporters that the Tesla was traveling at extreme speeds just before the accident.
“He was going at least 120, 130 mph,” the witness recalled.
“And then when he hit the other car, the damage was just so much that it split in half.
And that just started going on fire.”
Another witness described the desperate attempt to check on the survivors.
“We ran over to see if he was okay. He was barely moving.
Part of the car was a couple of feet away, and we asked him, ‘Was someone else in the car?'”
Aftermath and Emergency Response
The crash left debris scattered across multiple lanes of the FDR Drive, with large chunks of twisted metal marking the site of the tragedy.
At least 60 firefighters and an FDNY hazmat team were deployed to battle the flames, as the Tesla’s lithium-ion battery added complexity to the fire.
Officials confirmed that the blaze was fully extinguished by 3:50 a.m.
Investigation Ongoing
Authorities have yet to release the names of the victims as they continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the crash.
The FDR Drive was temporarily closed in both directions as emergency crews worked to clear the wreckage.
The tragic accident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers of high-speed driving, especially on busy urban highways.
