South African rugby legend Victor Matfield defends Springboks’ legacy as the greatest team in the world despite losing the number one spot to Ireland

The rugby world may have Ireland sitting atop the official rankings, but for Springbok legend Victor Matfield, the South African team is still the best in the game.

Matfield, one of the most respected voices in South African rugby, believes that rankings don’t tell the full story when it comes to the strength and legacy of the Boks.

A Legacy of Winning

While Ireland claimed the top spot in September, replacing South Africa in the number one position, Matfield remains confident in the Springboks’ supremacy.

Despite being ranked second, the Boks continue to shine, especially after clinching the Castle Lager Championship and holding onto their title as 2023 Rugby World Cup champions.

In a conversation with Sunday Rapport and shared by SA Rugby Magazine, Matfield expressed his belief that the Boks are still the dominant force in world rugby.

Trophies Speak Louder Than Rankings

Matfield argued that success in rugby isn’t just about rankings but about winning major tournaments and big games.

“From a team perspective, the Boks may not be No. 1 in World Rugby’s ranking, but for me, we are,” he stated.

His perspective is clear: winning the games that count and bringing home trophies matters more than being on top of the official standings.

“We’ve won all the cups and trophies we’ve competed for over the past few years.

In my opinion, we are by far the No. 1 team, and I don’t think anyone can challenge that,” Matfield said confidently.

Unmatched Dominance Over Rivals

Matfield also pointed out that South Africa’s achievements go beyond any single tournament.

He proudly noted the Springboks’ dominance, especially over fierce rivals like the All Blacks.

“Those in the northern hemisphere can say what they want, but the Webb Ellis Cup is here.

The Springboks have won the most Tests this season, and no other team has beaten the All Blacks four times in a row.”

Looking Forward: The Springboks’ Upcoming Challenges

Matfield’s praise for the Boks comes at a significant moment in their history.

Just last weekend, Eben Etzebeth broke Matfield’s record as the most-capped Springbok player.

As the team prepares for their upcoming matches against Wales, Scotland, and England, the Springboks will have the opportunity to further solidify their status as rugby’s best.

What’s next for the Springboks? Only time will tell, but if Matfield’s belief is anything to go by, the world should continue to keep an eye on this legendary team.
