South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa and Others Pay Tribute to Pravin Gordhan Following His Death in Durban While EFF Responds Negatively

As South Africa processes the loss of former finance minister Pravin Gordhan, the country is seeing a mix of responses.

While many are grieving and offering their condolences, some groups have expressed contrasting views.

Mourning and Tributes

Pravin Gordhan’s death on Friday morning, following his hospitalization earlier in the week, has prompted an outpouring of sympathy from various quarters.

President Cyril Ramaphosa, along with other political figures, has extended heartfelt condolences to Gordhan’s family.

In his tribute, Ramaphosa praised Gordhan as a dedicated leader whose quiet demeanor masked a profound intellect and unwavering commitment to justice and democracy.

He highlighted Gordhan’s fight against corruption and his significant contributions to South Africa’s political landscape.

Diverse Perspectives

Amidst the grief, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have taken a different stance.

The party, known for its controversial views on Gordhan, has made it clear that they do not mourn his passing.

They describe Gordhan as a figure whose legacy is linked to the decline of state-owned enterprises and a betrayal of the people.

The EFF criticized Gordhan’s tenure, labeling it a period of significant failure and arguing that his influence was detrimental to South Africa’s progress.

Tributes from Other Leaders

In contrast, Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen remembered Gordhan for his impactful role at SARS and his courageous stance against corruption.

Steenhuisen emphasized Gordhan’s legacy of servant leadership and his significant contributions to the nation.

Funeral Arrangements

President Ramaphosa confirmed that Gordhan will be honored with an official state funeral.

The service will take place in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, on Thursday, 19 September, followed by a private cremation for family members.

Gordhan is survived by his wife, Vanitha, their daughters Anisha and Priyesha, and his siblings, Manecklal Gordhan and Shanta Harilal.
