Maurizio Schillaci, once a prominent footballer in the 1980s with teams like Palermo and Lazio, now faces a starkly different reality.
The athlete who dazzled on the field is now struggling to find stability as he grapples with homelessness in Sicily.
A Career Marked by Triumph and Trouble
Schillaci’s football journey included stints with several other clubs, including Rimini, Licata, Messina, and Juventus Stabia.
Unfortunately, his career was marred by persistent injuries and a growing battle with drug addiction.
Both cocaine and heroin took a toll on his life, overshadowing his athletic achievements.
Life on the Streets of Palermo
At 62 years old, Schillaci has returned to his hometown of Palermo, but his circumstances have taken a dire turn.
He now finds himself living on the streets with his loyal dog, Ciccio.
Their situation has drawn the attention of a group of local volunteers who are determined to offer support.
Community Support in Action
A compassionate effort is underway to aid Schillaci and his canine companion.
Giusy Caldo, one of the dedicated volunteers, recently took to Facebook to seek additional help.
Caldo detailed the ongoing efforts to provide for Schillaci and his dog, noting that Schillaci is in a state of significant malnutrition and is craving the familiar flavors of home-cooked meals.
Caldo’s post read: “As you know, we are helping Maurizio Schillaci, the homeless man with the dog in Piazza Verdi (Massimo Theater).
He is undergoing a health program, tests, etc., and we are assisting with managing his dog.
Maurizio is quite malnourished and has expressed a longing for home-cooked meals over the sandwiches and baked pasta he’s been receiving.
Can we organize shifts to prepare homemade food? If you want to help, please reach out.”
Caring for Schillaci and His Dog
In addition to the cooking initiative, locals have also stepped up to care for Schillaci’s dog during his hospital visits.
This community-driven support underscores the compassion being shown to both Schillaci and his loyal companion.
A Family Connection
It’s worth noting that Maurizio Schillaci is related to former Italian striker Salvatore Schillaci, famous for his six goals in the 1990 World Cup.
Salvatore, now 59, has been battling colon cancer since 2022 and was recently hospitalized again.
Looking Ahead
The community’s efforts provide hope for Schillaci’s future.
As they continue to rally around him, the question remains: What will the next chapter hold for this once-celebrated footballer?
