On Monday, Manchester Cathedral became the gathering place to honor the life of Kath Phipps, a cherished figure at Manchester United.
Former manager Sir Alex Ferguson, along with numerous club legends, paid tribute to the beloved receptionist who worked with the club for over five decades.
Phipps, who passed away at 85 on December 5, was more than just an employee; she was considered an institution in her own right.
A Life Dedicated to Manchester United
Kath’s deep connection to Manchester United began in 1968, when she became the club’s first switchboard operator under the legendary Sir Matt Busby.
Her dedication to the team spanned beyond her official titles, and she became an enduring presence at both Old Trafford and Carrington, where she greeted staff, players, and visitors with a warm smile and positive energy.
In 2022, Phipps was honored with a Service to Football Award after more than 50 years of service.
Her legacy as a welcoming and supportive figure in the club was unforgettable.
As noted in the club’s statement following her passing, Kath was known for her cheerful demeanor, always offering a kind word or a friendly hug, no matter the circumstances.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s Heartfelt Tribute
Ferguson, who shared a special bond with Kath, reminisced about a personal moment during her final days.
At the funeral, he fondly recalled visiting her and sharing a lighthearted conversation.
“I thought she had a Coke to drink,” Ferguson shared, “but she told me it was a Bacardi and Coke. I asked her what the doctor would think about that, and she said, ‘I haven’t asked him.’”
His smile-filled story brought a touch of warmth to those who gathered to pay their respects.
Ferguson expressed his admiration for Kath’s unwavering dedication to the club and the people around her, noting how rare it was to meet someone so genuinely invested in others.
“She loved people so much, and everyone here is here to honor a very special person,” he concluded.
The United Family Pays Their Respects
The funeral service was marked by a powerful display of solidarity from the Manchester United family.
Current manager Ruben Amorim led the current squad, including Bruno Fernandes, Jonny Evans, and several other key players such as Marcus Rashford and Harry Maguire.
Former United players, including Roy Keane, Nicky Butt, and Phil Jones, were also present, showing the lasting impact Kath had on the club’s community.
Jones, who had joined United from Blackburn at a young age, described Kath as “the first face you would see” every morning at the club.
He reflected on how she embodied the warmth and camaraderie that Manchester United is known for, adding, “I am delighted to be here to give her what should be a fantastic send-off.”
Beckham’s Emotional Goodbye
David Beckham, who shared a special relationship with Kath, paid tribute on Instagram, sharing a picture of himself holding her hand during her final days.
He recalled how she had promised to take care of him when he first moved to Manchester at age 15.
“From that first day till the last day I spent with her, that’s exactly what she did,” Beckham wrote.
“Old Trafford will never be the same without your smile.”
Kath’s legacy lives on not only in the memories of those who knew her but in the spirit of the club she loved so dearly.
Her presence at the reception desk, welcoming everyone with warmth, will forever be etched in the hearts of all who had the privilege to meet her.
