Simone Biles has achieved a remarkable feat, cementing her status as the most decorated gymnast in Olympic history with three gold medals in Paris.
At 27 years old, Biles now boasts 11 Olympic medals, including seven gold. Despite her incredible success, she was visibly emotional after the women’s floor final on Monday. Walking back to the Paris Olympic Village with her teammates, Biles was overwhelmed by the moment.
Biles shared her feelings during an appearance on the ‘TODAY’ Show on Tuesday. “Yesterday, when we got back to the village, I looked at Jordan [Chiles] and started balling my eyes out,” she revealed.
Chiles reassured her, saying, “I knew it was going to happen, I just didn’t know when.” Biles described her experience as a release of emotions, feeling a mix of pride, happiness, and a touch of sadness as her journey came to an end. “It’s so crazy, it happened so quick. My third Olympics,” she reflected.
Future Plans and Speculations
Although Biles hasn’t decided if she’ll compete in a fourth Olympics, she’s keeping the possibility open. “You never say never,” she told hosts Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb on the ‘TODAY’ Show. With the next Olympics set to be in Los Angeles, Biles hinted that she might consider it.
For now, she plans to take some time to relax and see where life leads her.
Handling Controversy and Support
Before heading home, Biles faced online criticism, particularly from former US gymnastics teammate MyKayla Skinner. Skinner had criticized Biles prior to the Games, prompting calls for Biles to address the situation.
Support for Biles came from various quarters, including former US First Lady Michelle Obama. Obama defended Biles after she bowed to Brazilian rival Rebeca Andrade following the women’s floor final, where Biles finished second and Chiles took bronze.
Baltimore Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey had initially criticized Biles and Chiles for their podium gestures, but Biles has continued to focus on her performance and well-being.
Throughout the Paris Olympics, Biles sought therapy “three or four times” to manage her anxiety, also known as the ‘Twisties’ in gymnastics. Despite the challenges, she remains a symbol of resilience and excellence in the sport.
