Sphelele Mkhulise has revealed that his strong connection with Mamelodi Sundowns played a major role in his decision to remain at the club despite facing competition for a regular place in the starting XI.

The 30-year-old attacking midfielder signed a new two-year contract with the Brazilians in January, with the agreement also containing an option for an additional season.

His decision came after a difficult campaign in which injuries and fierce competition for places restricted his opportunities.

Limited opportunities did not change his mind

Mkhulise made just 10 appearances across all competitions during the season in question and did not register a goal contribution.

His limited involvement was partly influenced by injuries, while Sundowns’ depth in attacking midfield has also made regular playing time difficult to secure.

Marcelo Allende remains one of the established options in the position, while Nuno Santos and Katlego Ntsabeleng are among the other players competing for opportunities.

Despite the challenges, Mkhulise has continued to view his future at Chloorkop positively.

‘It’s like I’m home here’

Speaking during Sundowns’ media open day at Chloorkop, Mkhulise explained that his happiness at the club made the contract decision straightforward.

“It’s because I’m happy here. They take good care of me, and I’m in a happy place. It’s like I’m home here. So for me to sign a new contract, it was a no-brainer,” he told journalists.

The midfielder made it clear that his decision was not based solely on footballing opportunities, pointing instead to the environment created by the club’s leadership.

Sundowns leadership earns Mkhulise’s praise

Mkhulise credited the club’s senior leadership for helping him remain motivated during his time with the Brazilians.

He highlighted the influence of the president, chairman, board, coaching staff and team captains, saying their approach encourages players to maintain high standards.

“So I didn’t even think twice. I’m happy here, and what’s kept me going for so long here, I think it all starts with the leadership; they inspire us,” Mkhulise said.

He added that the leadership group continually motivates the squad to work hard and deliver results.

Trophies also strengthen his bond with Sundowns

While Mkhulise placed considerable emphasis on the club’s leadership, he acknowledged that Sundowns’ success on the pitch has also helped reinforce his commitment.

The Brazilians have established themselves as one of South Africa’s most successful clubs in recent years, with their trophy-winning record providing another reason for players to remain invested in the project.

“Yes, the trophies help as well,” Mkhulise said before again acknowledging the influence of the club’s leadership and football department.

Mkhulise enjoying a stronger start to the new season

The midfielder’s fortunes have shown signs of improvement this season.

Mkhulise has already featured in five Betway Premiership matches and has scored twice. He has also made one appearance in the MTN8.

His early-season involvement could provide him with an opportunity to establish a more prominent role within a Sundowns squad containing significant competition for places.

Competition remains fierce at Chloorkop

The challenge for Mkhulise is unlikely to disappear, with Sundowns continuing to possess several options capable of operating in attacking and creative positions.

Allende remains a regular starter, while players such as Santos and Ntsabeleng are also competing for opportunities.

For Mkhulise, however, the competition has not been enough to make him reconsider his commitment to the club.

His comments suggest that the relationship he has developed with Sundowns, combined with the club’s leadership, environment and winning culture, remains central to his decision to stay.
