It’s wild to think how much can change in just a year.
Last May, Scottie Scheffler’s second round at the PGA Championship began with him actually sitting in handcuffs inside a Louisville police car.
Fast forward to this year, and he’s walking into Quail Hollow completely free of distractions—and playing some of the best golf we’ve seen from him.
No drama, no arrests, just pure focus and skill on the course.
Scheffler put together a solid three-under-par 68 that has him closing in on the tournament leader, Jhonattan Vegas from Venezuela.
With the weekend ahead, it looks like Scheffler is gearing up for a strong charge.
A Strong Showing in a Star-Studded Group
Playing alongside two of golf’s biggest names—Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele—Scheffler stood out over the first two days.
He made birdies on two holes before the turn and then added two more on the back nine.
His only stumble came at the tricky par-3 13th hole, where his tee shot veered left, causing a bit of a stir among the spectators.
With a 15-foot putt to save par, he just missed the mark.
But that small hiccup didn’t overshadow a mostly impressive round.
Major Wins Still Elusive but Within Reach
Despite Scheffler’s steady success on the PGA Tour, it’s surprising to remember he’s only claimed two major championship titles so far.
Right now, though, he looks ready to add another trophy to his collection over this weekend.
After his round, he was optimistic but realistic. “I like the position I’m in going into the weekend,” he said.
“I wish I was a little higher up on the leaderboard, but I’m getting a lot out of my game.
My swing kept improving as the round went on, and I hit some key shots late that gave me opportunities. I’m looking forward to the weekend.”
The Leader to Chase: Jhonattan Vegas
Scheffler’s clear target is Jhonattan Vegas, who held the lead after round two.
Vegas, who started the day two shots ahead and leading a major for the first time in his career, shot a one-under-par 70.
That put him at eight-under overall, two shots clear of a tight group including Matthieu Pavon, Matt Fitzpatrick, and Si Woo Kim.
Vegas is playing solid golf, and it will take everything Scheffler has to catch him over the next two days.
Rising Contenders Make Their Moves
Elsewhere on the leaderboard, Max Homa is making waves with the best round of his major career.
Homa, who won his first PGA Tour title at Quail Hollow back in 2019, fired a seven-under-par 64.
His hot start with a blistering front nine helped him climb into a tie for fifth place alongside Scheffler and Ryan Gerard.
What’s Next at the PGA Championship
With the weekend just ahead, the excitement is building.
Scheffler looks focused and ready to make a charge, Vegas wants to hold onto his lead, and players like Homa are stepping up as serious challengers.
It promises to be a thrilling finish at Quail Hollow.
