Sadiq Khan supports Heathrow Southern Rail connecting to Surrey and south west London

The Mayor of London has expressed support for the Southern Rail Link scheme, emphasizing its potential to improve access to the UK’s busiest airport, Heathrow.

The proposal involves laying a new track from Terminal 5 station to connect with the South Western Railway network at Staines. Trains would then travel through various routes, including Twickenham, Richmond, Hounslow, Brentford, Clapham Junction, and Waterloo. Another branch would extend the service to Virginia Water, opening up transportation options for Surrey, Berkshire, and Hampshire residents. This extension could also utilize the existing Elizabeth line infrastructure to reach Paddington, including a stop at the HS2 station of Old Oak Common.

The Mayor’s endorsement of the project came in response to a written question from Caroline Pidgeon, the leader of the Liberal Democrat group in the London Assembly. He emphasized the potential benefits of the Southern Rail Link to Heathrow in promoting sustainable travel modes and enhancing airport access for passengers and staff from southern London, Surrey, and Hampshire. The Mayor acknowledged recent developments that have increased the project’s prospects, highlighting ongoing discussions between the Greater London Authority, Transport for London, and various stakeholders to address existing challenges.

The Southern Rail Link proposal is put forward by Heathrow Southern Railway Limited (HSRL), which aims to build and own the infrastructure. Estimated to cost approximately £1.3 billion, the company intends to charge train operators an access fee for running passenger services on the route, subject to regulation by the Office for Rail and Road.

The government has expressed its commitment to improving rail access to Heathrow airport, with a preference for private sector funding and delivery. The project has the potential to resolve longstanding connectivity issues between Heathrow and south London. Currently, the airport is accessible primarily from central London via the Piccadilly and Elizabeth lines, as well as the Heathrow Express service.

In 2016, it was revealed that a large underground station, built in anticipation of the HSRL scheme, lies beneath Heathrow Terminal 5. The limited rail access to the airport has been a point of concern, prompting calls for enhanced connectivity to south London areas.
