Russia Conducts Naval Drills as NATO States Begin Their Own Exercises

In a display of military strength, Vladimir Putin has orchestrated extensive naval drills in the Baltic Sea and Pacific Ocean, highlighting Russia’s military capabilities amid setbacks in the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The naval exercises in the Baltic Sea involve approximately 40 surface warships and 25 aircraft, with the participation of around 3,500 service personnel.

These drills, scheduled to continue until June 15, take place in an area shared by Russia and seven NATO countries, including Sweden, which is set to join the alliance.

The Baltic Sea borders Denmark, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Germany.

The NATO exercises involve 6,000 personnel, 50 ships, and over 45 aircraft, with Finland participating for the first time as an alliance member.

The Russian drills proceeded despite various challenges in Ukraine, including internal conflicts within Russian ranks.

Meanwhile, in the Russian Far East, more than 60 naval and support vessels, along with 35 aircraft, were deployed for exercises taking place in the seas of Japan and Okhotsk off the Pacific coast, a distance of 6,400 miles from the Baltic Sea.

Putin’s strategic war games involved over 11,000 troops in total.

The operational exercise in the Pacific region is directed by Admiral Viktor Liina, the Fleet Commander.

Footage of the drills captured warships departing from Vladivostok and engaging in the Kremlin’s military exercises, showcasing Russia’s naval capabilities.

These drills occur amid significant setbacks in Putin’s war in Ukraine.

Russian forces are currently engaged in territorial conflicts with pro-Ukrainian forces in the Belgorod region.

Additionally, Russian partisans in the area have posed a challenge to Russian control.

The Russian army reported repelling a “sabotage group of Ukrainian terrorists” attempting to cross the border near the village of Novaya Tavolzhanka in the southern Belgorod region.

Last month, armed incursions from Ukraine into the Belgorod region led Russia to deploy its artillery and air force on its own soil.

Anti-Kremlin Russian ultra-nationalists claimed responsibility for the border breach.

It has also been revealed that the Russian mercenary force known as Wagner captured a lieutenant colonel from Putin’s regular forces, highlighting the internal conflicts within Russian ranks.

The mercenaries have accused the regular Russian army of targeting their ranks with mines, and footage shows their sappers clearing explosive devices from a road.

Wagner mercenaries have been involved in fighting for Putin in Ukraine and are credited with capturing the embattled city of Bakhmut from Ukrainian armed forces.

However, their successes have seemingly provoked anger among regular Russian army commanders.
