…By Henry George for TDPel Media. Finnish Prime Minister, Sanna Marin, and her husband, Markus Raikkonen, have announced their decision to divorce after 19 years together.
The couple shared the news on their Instagram accounts and stated that they had filed for divorce together.
They also emphasised that they will continue to be best friends and loving parents to their five-year-old daughter, Emma Amalia Marin.
The announcement comes just over a year after the couple tied the knot in 2020.
Markus Raikkonen is a former footballer and current entrepreneur and investor.
Sanna Marin made headlines in 2019 when she became the youngest prime minister in Finland’s history, and the world’s youngest leader, at just 34 years old.
She has been praised for her vocal support of Ukraine and for advocating for Finland’s successful application to join NATO.
However, her hopes of securing a second term were dashed when she was defeated by the leader of Finland’s centre-right National Coalition Party, Petteri Orpo, in April 2021.
Despite her success as a young female leader, Marin has also faced criticism during her time in office.
She was subject to a misconduct investigation after a photo of two women pulling their shirts up during a party at the prime minister’s official residence was shared online.
Marin apologised and stated that the photo was “not appropriate”. She has also been the target of extensive hate speech for her gender and appearance, along with her fellow young female ministers.
The announcement of Marin’s divorce is a reminder that even high-profile politicians are not immune to personal struggles and challenges.
It is also a testament to the couple’s commitment to co-parenting and maintaining a positive relationship despite their decision to end their marriage.
