Harry Maguire recently opened up about his decision to extend his contract with Manchester United, sharing insights from his conversation with manager Ruben Amorim.
According to Maguire, Amorim made it clear that it was a “no-brainer” for him to stay at the club.
The defender expressed his eagerness to help Manchester United get back to competing for top honors.
Maguire’s contract was extended until June 2026, with Amorim pushing for improvements in both his performance and leadership.
“It gave me confidence knowing they want me here as part of the project,” Maguire said.
“I want to see the club back fighting for titles, not stuck where we are in the table right now. There’s a long way to go.”
The Road to Recovery After Tough Losses
After facing four consecutive defeats, Manchester United managed to draw against Liverpool at Anfield and then secured a win against Arsenal in the FA Cup Third Round, triumphing on penalties.
Maguire praised teammates, particularly goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, who stepped up in the penalty shootout and saved key spot-kicks, including one from Martin Ødegaard and another from Kai Havertz.
Maguire acknowledged Bayindir’s resilience after a tough match against Tottenham, noting that playing for a club like United means experiencing both highs and lows.
“He was brilliant in that match,” Maguire said.
“He made crucial saves at key moments. His performance, especially during the penalty shootout, was huge for us.”
Praise for Zirkzee and United’s Fan Support
Maguire also took the time to recognize Joshua Zirkzee, who scored the winning penalty after facing criticism earlier in the season.
“I’ve had tough times here, but the fans always stuck with me. They were there for me during the bad moments,” he reflected.
“When Zirkzee scored that penalty, it was a great redemption moment. Everyone believed in him.”
He emphasized the importance of consistency moving forward, especially after the team’s disappointing league performance.
United’s current position of 13th in the Premier League is far from acceptable, according to Maguire, who stressed that the team needs to build on their recent successes.
The Importance of Consistency for Manchester United
With a crucial upcoming match against Southampton, Maguire stressed the importance of maintaining consistency.
“Our league position is embarrassing,” he admitted.
“We can’t rest on our past performances. We know we’re capable of more, and we need to show that over a longer period. We’ve had moments of brilliance, but we need to turn that into consistent form.”
Maguire pointed out that results will follow if the team focuses on maintaining high performance.
He believes that the squad, which includes experienced players, should be doing much better in the league standings.
Reflecting on His Own Performance Under Amorim
On a personal note, Maguire discussed his own form under Amorim, acknowledging that while he might not be at his absolute peak, he’s steadily returning to top form.
“I don’t think I’ve played better than in my first couple of years at United, but I’m getting back to that level now. Mentally and physically, I feel good,” he shared.
Despite a tough season under Ralf Rangnick, Maguire feels he’s rediscovered his best and is eager to help the team turn things around.
He added, “I know I had a difficult third season, but I’ve found something since then. I’m ready to contribute and help the team get back to where we belong.”
