Rodrygo Scores First Goal in 32 Games to Lead Real Madrid Against Manchester City at the Bernabeu in Spain

Rodrygo finally ended a 32-game goal drought in Wednesday’s thrilling Champions League encounter between Real Madrid and Manchester City at the Bernabeu.

Starting due to Kylian Mbappe’s knee issues, the Brazilian seized his rare opportunity under coach Xabi Alonso, scoring a crucial opener for the hosts.

The goal came on a quick counterattack.

Jude Bellingham fed Rodrygo at the edge of the box, and the 22-year-old blasted the ball past Gianluigi Donnarumma around the half-hour mark, capitalizing on a lapse by City’s Nico O’Reilly.

Madrid Falters Despite Early Lead

Rodrygo’s strike proved short-lived.

O’Reilly redeemed himself less than ten minutes later, and Erling Haaland converted a penalty just before halftime, leaving Madrid trailing 2-1.

The result marked back-to-back defeats for Madrid for the first time this season, following Sunday’s 2-0 home loss to Celta Vigo, putting pressure on Alonso as speculation over his future mounts.

Guardiola Praises Rodrygo

Despite the loss, Pep Guardiola couldn’t resist praising Rodrygo after the match. Speaking to Movistar, the City manager said:

“I told Rodrygo how good he is. He’s a player from another level.

I’m glad he’s back from injury. He’s very, very good.”

Guardiola has faced Rodrygo multiple times in Europe, and the Brazilian has a remarkable record against City, scoring five times in ten encounters.

A Career Highlight Against City

Rodrygo’s most memorable performances against City came in the 2021-22 Champions League semi-finals, where he scored two late goals off the bench, cementing his reputation among Madridistas.

His tally against Guardiola’s teams places him alongside elite company: only Karim Benzema (6), Kylian Mbappe, and Lionel Messi (7) have netted more against City keepers.

Transfer Talk and Loyalty to Madrid

City has reportedly pursued Rodrygo in the past, including as recently as last summer, but the Brazilian turned down the move to stay at Madrid.

Despite limited playing time this season — only three La Liga starts and two in the Champions League — he remains committed to the club, showing affection for Alonso after his strike and emphasizing team unity.

“It’s a difficult time for us and for Xabi.

Things aren’t going well and I wanted to show that we’re behind our coach,” Rodrygo said.

Alonso echoed the sentiment, praising the winger’s performance: “Together is how we can turn things around, and I appreciate that.”

Looking Ahead for Rodrygo

Rodrygo’s future at Madrid remains uncertain.

He competes for the left-wing spot with Vinicius Jr, while also contending with Arda Guler, Franco Mastantuono, Brahim Diaz, and sometimes Mbappe on the opposite flank.

If his appearances continue to be sporadic, rumors of a potential transfer could resurface, and Guardiola may once again be tempted to bring the talented Brazilian to Manchester City.

For now, though, Rodrygo’s goal serves as a reminder of his quality and his ability to rise to the occasion in Europe’s biggest games.
