The South African hip-hop community is mourning the loss of another great talent. Boitumelo Athiel Mooi, popularly known as DJ Dimplez, passed away on Sunday 6 March. In a statement sent to Channel24, the Mooi family confirmed that the popular DJ died of a sudden brain heamorrhage.
In remembrance of DJ Dimplez, take a look at five of his biggest hits. The hip-hop DJ collaborated with some of the brightest stars in the industry including hip-hop star Riky Rick.
1. ‘WAY UP’ FEATURING CASSPER NYOVEST AND JR
Way Up is the fourth track on DJ Dimplez’s 20-track project, Zeal. The high-energy track, released in 2014, was one of the biggest hip-hop tracks at the time. Cassper Nyovest raps on the verses while Idols SA judge JR delivers a clean hook.

2. ‘BAE COUPE’ FEATURING ICE PRINCE, EMMY GEE AND RIKY RICK
DJ Dimplez teamed up with Ice Prince, Emmy Gee and Riky Rick for the 2015 hip-hop track, Bae Coupe. At the time, DJ Dimplez told Zkhiphani that the song is an “appreciation of the prosperity”.
“It’s about being able to reward yourself and those you love. At the end of the day, life is all about what you put in.”

3. ‘F*CK UP YOUR DAY’ FEATURING ICE PRINCE, REASON AND ROYAL EMPIRE
F*ck Up Your Day featuring Nigerian singer-songwriter Ice Prince, Royal Empire and South African rapper Reason, is one of the few international collaborations DJ Dimplez released. The song was officially released in 2017.

4. ‘YAYA’ FEATURING DREAMTEAM AND ANATII
Yaya featuring Durban-based hip-hop group DreamTeam and local producer Anatii was officially released in 2014. The track sparked a fun dance that had South African hip-hop fans moving from side to side.
The song’s music video, directed by Studio Space Pictures, was nominated for a South African Music Award (Sama) for Best Music Video of the Year.

5. ‘TOAST’ FEATURING JR AND GEORGE AVAKIAN
DJ Dimplez’s Toast is one of those cool club anthems. The track, originally released in 2012, featuring JR and former rapper George Avakian, is one of DJ Dimplez’s most popular songs. In the song, Dimplez, JR and George Avakian make a toast to all the good times!
