Residents living near a £100 million abandoned housing estate in Clipstone, Nottinghamshire, are finally seeing a glimmer of hope. The estate, which has remained unfinished for nine months, was recently sold to Persimmon Homes, giving locals reason to believe that the long-awaited construction might resume.
The new development project, which began with high expectations, faced a major setback when the original contractor, Sherwood Oaks Homes, went into administration last October.
Out of 313 planned homes, only 30 were completed before work came to a halt. Since then, the site has become a haven for wildlife, with deer and foxes now calling the unfinished houses their home.
The scene has even been compared to the eerie settings from HBO’s “The Last of Us.”
Residents’ Desperation
Local residents have expressed their frustration and concern over the halted project. Great-grandmother June Harrison, 76, shared her dismay: “They’ve been empty since last October.
They look like they would be beautiful houses, so it’s been a real shame. It’s a bit creepy to see, especially with deer and foxes living there now.
We’re relieved that Persimmon Homes is taking over, but we’re still waiting to hear when work will be completed.”
Another resident, who chose to remain anonymous, added, “It’s not the developers’ fault, but living next to this eyesore for months has been tough.
With the wildlife taking over, it feels like something out of a dystopian show.
I hope they can finish it soon, although I wonder if people will want to pay half a million pounds to live here.”
Community Reactions
Retired factory worker Linda Macutkiewicz, 75, echoed these sentiments: “It looks abandoned and needs to be finished. It’s such a shame because the houses are lovely, and it’s disappointing to see them standing empty.
Some were completed but left vacant over the winter. Most people just want to see them completed and occupied.”
On social media, reactions to the sale have been mixed.
One person commented, “Let’s hope they get on with the job now,” while another was more skeptical, saying, “I’ll believe it when I see it.” A third simply remarked, “About time. It’s looked a mess for months.”
A New Beginning
Gareth Hankin, managing director at Persimmon Nottingham, expressed optimism about the project’s future: “We are really excited to bring the Persimmon brand to this part of Mansfield.
It’s a fantastic location with easy access to the town centre and local amenities, plus beautiful open countryside just minutes away.”
As work resumes, residents and potential buyers alike hope that the once-abandoned estate will soon transform into a thriving community.
