Jesse Powell, a singer and composer of R&B and soul, has passed away.
Jesse “passed peacefully” on Tuesday, September 13, at his Los Angeles home, according to a family statement posted on his sister, Grammy-winning musician Tamara Powell’s social media accounts.
The legendary musician passed away on September 12, one day after his 51st birthday.
The Powell family released a statement that began, “It is with a sad heart that we announce the demise of our beloved son, brother, and uncle Jesse Powell.
As they “mourn and celebrate” Jesse’s “everlasting legacy,” the family requested privacy.
“Jesse loved music, and he loved his fans even more since they helped him succeed throughout his career. We want everyone of you to know how much you meant to him,” the message continued.
Tamara expressed a touching homage to her elder brother in a different post, praising him as the greatest voice of our time.
“You were the finest big brother ever, in addition to being one of the best R&B male singers ever. I adored you so much, Tamara remarked.
“I’m glad we were so close because it was a complete disaster all the time. Our family truly cherished you, “Jet,” and we shall miss you terribly.
The news of Jesse’s passing was met with shock, then an outpouring of support from the musician’s friends, fans, and bandmates.
Deep sympathies to you and the family, said Canadian actress and singer Deborah Cox in a message. Such a gentlemanly and kind person. He sang down during a promotional concert we held in St. Louis, I recall. Whew!! Such a voice!
“Sis I’m completely at a lost for words! I was simply too shocked by this. I’ve never met a funnier, cooler vocalist than your brother. A real monarch who is going to be missed. I’m sending prayers to you and your family, the American musician Ricco Barrino stated.
“A terrible loss. Warmest sympathies to you and your family, said music industry executive Wardell Malloy.
The song “You,” which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard R&B charts in 1998, made Jesse famous.
Prior to his musical retirement in 2003, Powell had four albums out and was the elder brother of Trina & Tamara, two notable current R&B singers.
Fans continue to pay tribute to the music star on various social media channels. Some of the responses are included below.
“Jesse Powell is another one of those artists who I don’t know ever got his flowers when he was here,” tweeted @Spaceodditykel. He had such an amazing recognised voice and made some of the most beautiful songs that will long be played in my home.
