Rasmus Hojlund finally ended his frustrating goal drought, finding the net in Manchester United’s 3-0 victory over Leicester.
The £72 million striker had gone over 22 hours without scoring, a barren stretch lasting 22 matches since mid-December.
While many pointed fingers at the lack of service he received, Hojlund himself isn’t shying away from taking responsibility.
Owning Up to His Role in the Struggles
Acknowledging his struggles, Hojlund admitted that his performances hadn’t been at the level he expected.
“It’s not just about the team; I have to take responsibility too,” he shared.
“I haven’t been at my best, and we’re all still adjusting to a new system and different positions.
But I feel like I’ve been improving, and things are starting to come together.”
Despite moments of frustration, including an on-field disagreement with teammate Diogo Dalot during a recent Europa League match, Hojlund believes the team is building better chemistry.
“We’re understanding each other’s strengths more,” he explained.
“The manager wants us to play to our strengths, and now things are starting to click.”
A Moment of Relief at King Power Stadium
His long-awaited goal came in the 28th minute against Leicester when he received a well-placed pass from Bruno Fernandes.
With composure, he maneuvered past Wout Faes before slotting the ball home for his eighth goal of the season—halfway to his tally from last year.
While thrilled to have ended the drought, Hojlund admitted the feeling wasn’t as overwhelming as when he scored his first Premier League goal against Aston Villa on Boxing Day 2023.
“It’s a big confidence boost, and I’m sure more will come,” he said.
“But it wasn’t quite like that first goal. That was different. Still, this is a step forward, and I just want to keep improving.”
Strengthening Partnerships and Embracing His Role
Hojlund has been developing a stronger connection with teammate Joshua Zirkzee, especially under new head coach Ruben Amorim.
With Zirkzee shifting to a wider role rather than being a direct replacement for him, the duo is finding ways to complement each other.
“It’s great playing alongside him,” Hojlund noted.
“He’s a fantastic guy, and we push each other to be better. Competition is good, but we also bring out the best in each other.”
As for his role in Amorim’s system, Hojlund knows exactly what’s expected of him.
“He wants me to stretch the pitch, use my speed, and keep the center-backs busy. That’s what I’m here for.”
Looking Ahead
Now that the drought is behind him, Hojlund is eager to keep the momentum going.
With growing confidence and a stronger connection with his teammates, the Danish striker believes the best is yet to come.
“I know I’m not the finished article yet,” he admitted. “But I’m working hard, and I know I’ll get even better.”
