Remember the classic Reliant three-wheeled van from “Only Fools and Horses”?
It’s set to hit the auction block for the third time in just three years.
Even Del Boy might find it hard to pass up this chance to snag a deal on a piece of British TV history.
A Glimpse into the Van’s Past
The van in question is a Regal Supervan III from 1972, a model bought by the BBC in 1981 for the iconic comedy series.
This van was part of a fleet of six used throughout the show’s 22-year run.
It’s making a return to the auction scene at Classic Car Auctions in Warwickshire on September 28.
Auction History and Price Fluctuations
Previously sold for £36,000 three years ago, this van’s guide price for the upcoming auction is significantly lower, at less than half of its last sale price.
It’s uncertain which specific episodes featured this van, but it’s believed to have appeared in the first two series, including the famous ‘chandelier’ episode, “A Touch of Glass,” from 1982.
The Van’s Noteworthy Owners
This Regal Supervan III was once owned by the late BBC director John Mansfield, who had several of these vans from the series.
Mansfield sold one in 2017 for a record £41,625.
The van was later sold at Silverstone Auctions in 2021 for £36,000, but it was soon back at auction with CCA last summer, fetching just over £19,000—almost a 45% loss compared to its previous sale price.
Current Condition and Features
Despite its comedic reputation as a ‘crappy old three-wheeled van,’ this vehicle was known for its reliability during filming.
It endured long days on set and even long-distance travel for location shoots.
After the show ended in 2003, it was sold to a collector and later retained by an enthusiast until 2021.
The van’s guide price for the upcoming auction is between £15,000 and £18,000.
If it sells closer to the lower estimate, its value will have dropped by 58% over just three years.
The vehicle still features its distinctive paint job with ‘New York, Paris, Peckham’ and ‘Trotters Independent Traders’ slogans.
With 97,000 miles on the clock, the van has recently had new tyres, brakes, and a refreshed fuel system.
Iconic Status and Auction Expectations
The van remains a beloved piece of British television memorabilia, joining other famous vehicles like Inspector Morse’s Jaguar Mk2.
CCA’s spokesperson highlighted that the enduring popularity of “Only Fools and Horses,” along with the upcoming nationwide tour of its stage musical, adds to the van’s appeal.
For collectors and fans, this van represents a unique opportunity to own a slice of British comedy history.
