Impact of Trump’s Proposed Tariffs on Everyday Goods
President Donald Trump’s recent tariff proposals could lead to higher prices on many everyday items, from avocados to beer.
The President has threatened to introduce a 25% tariff on Canadian goods, including oil, natural gas, and electricity, alongside a 10% tax on Chinese imports.
On top of that, he signed executive orders on Saturday to enforce a 25% tariff on Mexican goods.
While the tariff on Mexico has been delayed for a month, the one on China is expected to take effect on February 4.
Why the Tariffs?
Trump claims these tariffs are necessary due to national security concerns, citing issues with fentanyl and undocumented immigration.
However, he acknowledged that the measures may cause “some pain” for American consumers but argued that the long-term benefits would outweigh the temporary difficulties.
In 2023, the U.S. imported over $1.3 trillion worth of goods from Canada, Mexico, and China, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
Rising Food Prices
One of the most immediate effects of the tariffs would be on food prices, especially as tariffs on Mexico, where the U.S. imports a significant portion of its vegetables and fruits, are still expected to go into effect next month.
For instance, around two-thirds of U.S. vegetable imports and half of its fruit and nut imports come from Mexico.
That includes almost 90% of the U.S.’s avocados, 35% of its orange juice, and 20% of its strawberries.
The U.S. also imports over 1 million cattle from Mexico each year, with beef prices expected to increase if the tariffs go through.
Analysts suggest that these rising food costs will mainly hit consumers, who may see prices go up on everything from avocados to steak.
Drink Prices Could Soar
Beer lovers might also feel the pinch, especially with Mexican beer like Modelo Especial Lager gaining popularity in the U.S.
If the tariffs go through, a six-pack of Modelo could increase from $11 to around $13.75.
Similarly, Mexican tequila and Canadian whisky could also see price
