Presidency issues clarification on the alleged proposal by Tinubu to relocate the Federal Capital to Lagos

Debunking Rumors FCT’s Alleged Move to Lagos

The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has vehemently refuted claims suggesting plans to relocate the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to Lagos State.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Onanuga dismissed those spreading such rumors as dishonest individuals with ethnic and regional biases, aiming to garner attention for themselves.

History of Rumors From 2023 Presidential Campaign to Present

Onanuga highlighted that these speculations had initially surfaced during the 2023 presidential campaign as a tactic to impede Tinubu’s presidential bid.

Despite their persistence, the rumors were debunked at that time.

He emphasized that the FCT, established by law, is a permanent entity and is not subject to relocation.

Clarification on FAAN’s Move No Shift of FCT to Lagos

Addressing specific concerns about the relocation of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to Lagos, Onanuga clarified that this move should not be misconstrued as transferring the entire FCT to Lagos.

He explained that FAAN, a department of the Aviation Ministry, is merely returning to its original base in Lagos and will maintain a presence in Abuja.

CBN Departments’ Relocation Proximity to Business Operations

Onanuga also discussed the relocation of certain departments of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to Lagos, emphasizing that this move is intended to place regulatory bodies closer to the businesses they oversee.

He pointed out that departments dealing with commercial banks, all headquartered in Lagos, are being shifted for practical reasons related to their regulatory functions.

A Call to End Politicization Upholding Administrative Decisions

Expressing concern over the politicization of administrative decisions, Onanuga urged against turning such matters into political tools.

He stressed the need to refrain from creating and spreading baseless rumors, especially when they have the potential to sow discord and distract from the broader goals of the administration led by a southerner.

Guard Against Dangerous Politics A Plea for Sobriety

In conclusion, Onanuga urged a halt to what he termed “dirty politics,” emphasizing the need to avoid politicizing every administrative decision.

He cautioned against using unfounded rumors to undermine an administration, especially when it is temporarily not in power, and called for a collective commitment to a more sober and responsible political discourse.
