As Pope Francis continues his recovery at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, Catholics worldwide are preparing to honor his 12th anniversary as the leader of the Church.
While there won’t be official Vatican celebrations, many religious communities and institutions are planning Masses and prayers to mark the occasion.
Pope’s Health Shows Signs of Improvement
Despite concerns over his health, there’s been a slight improvement in Pope Francis’ condition.
His doctors at Gemelli Hospital have confirmed that while his situation remains complex, he is no longer in immediate danger.
The Holy Father is receiving respiratory and movement therapy while following curial spiritual exercises via video from his hospital room.
A Vatican medical bulletin is expected later today, following the evening rosary.
In the meantime, the faithful continue to gather in prayer outside the hospital, near the statue of St. John Paul II.
Masses are also being held in the hospital chapel as a sign of solidarity with the ailing pope.
Cardinal to Lead Rosary for Pope’s Recovery
At 6 p.m. this evening, Cardinal George Jacob Koovakad, head of the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue, will lead the rosary for Pope Francis.
The prayer gathering is expected to draw many worshippers who are praying for his continued healing.
Catholic Institutions to Celebrate Anniversary with Masses
While the Vatican hasn’t planned any formal events for the pope’s anniversary, various Catholic institutions have taken the lead in commemorating the milestone.
One of the most notable celebrations will take place at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross.
On Thursday, Rector Fernando Puig will preside over a special Mass at 12:45 p.m. in the Basilica of St. Apollinare. Reflecting on the pope’s impact, Puig highlighted how Francis has emphasized the importance of spreading the Gospel, showing mercy, and building a culture of hope and unity.
Pope Francis’ Journey Since His Hospitalization

Thankfully, in the past week, his condition has stabilized, and there have been promising signs of recovery.
As he reaches his 12-year mark as pope, Catholics around the world are not only celebrating his leadership but also keeping him in their prayers, hoping for a full recovery.b
