Cultists Apprehended for POS Operator’s Murder and Robbery
The Ekiti State Police Command has made a significant breakthrough in the case of the murder of a Point of Sale (POS) operator, Olasunkanmi Joseph, who was brutally killed in broad daylight on April 6, 2023, while returning from a bank in Ado-Ekiti.
The police have arrested 13 suspected cultists believed to be responsible for the heinous crime.
Parade of Suspects for Various Criminal Offenses
These 13 suspects were paraded at the Ekiti State Police Command headquarters alongside 16 others who were arrested for various criminal offenses, including kidnapping, impersonation, and attempted murder.
The arrests mark a significant development in addressing crime in the state.
Crucial Tip-Off Leads to Arrest
The breakthrough in the case came following a credible tip-off that the suspected cultists were planning another robbery attack from their hideout.
The police’s Rapid Response Squad (RRS) swiftly mobilized to apprehend the suspects, preventing a potential robbery.
Confessions of Cult Membership and Criminal Activities
The arrested individuals confessed to being members of the Supreme Eiye Confraternity cult group based in Ikere-Ekiti.
They admitted to their involvement in robbery attacks and kidnapping, shedding light on their criminal activities.
Recovery of AK-47 Rifle
During the arrests, the police recovered an AK-47 rifle from the suspects, linking it to the murder of the POS operator.
Further investigation revealed that the same weapon had been used in other criminal activities, including the attack and arson of the Afao Divisional Police Headquarters during the 2020 ENSARS protest.
Leader of the Supreme Eiye Confraternity Arrested
One of the arrested suspects, Adewumi Gboyega, also known as PASU, was identified as a drug baron and the current leader of the Supreme Eiye Confraternity.
He was implicated in the kidnapping of an individual named Falana Opeyemi, and efforts are underway to locate the victim.
Ongoing Efforts to Apprehend Fleeing Suspects
The police are actively pursuing the arrest of other suspects who may have fled the scene.
They are also working to recover additional stolen arms and ammunition, further enhancing the safety and security of the region.
