PICTURES: Medals unveiled for 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham

Organisers of the 2022 Commonwealth Games have revealed the medals which will be awarded to podium finishers when the multi-sport event kicks off on Thursday, 28 July in Birmingham, England.

The games will run until Monday, 8 August.

According to the event’s official Twitter page, the medals were “designed by local students and manufactured in the Jewellery Quarter”.

The “medals are inspired by the roads and canals that link our city and region”.

The event in Birmingham will be the 22nd Commonwealth Games to be held.

As many as 72 Commonwealth nations are expected to take part with over 5 000 athletes competing in 283 events in 20 different sports.

Team SA finished sixth at the most recent Commonwealth Games

At the most recent Commonwealth Games in 2018 in Gold Coast, South Africa finished sixth in the medals table with 37 total medals, comprising 13 gold, 11 silver and 13 bronze medals won.

Hosts Australia were the runaway table toppers with 198 medals.
