Peter Kay was spotted leaving rehearsals for his latest show at the O2 Arena in London on Monday, looking as calm and collected as ever.
The comedian, now 51, appeared in great spirits as he made his way back to his bus after practicing for his highly anticipated comeback show.
He kept things casual in a smart black jacket and jeans, accessorized with a black cap, all while heading out from the arena following his rehearsal session for his monthly residency at the venue.
A Phenomenal Success: £27 Million and Counting
Peter’s ongoing tour is a major success, with earnings already hitting an estimated £27 million, solidifying his position as the top earner among comedians.
His “Better Late Than Never” shows have far exceeded expectations, surpassing the £10.3 million made by Michael McIntyre.
Tickets for Peter’s shows average £59.70, significantly higher than Michael’s average price of £43.35, proving his draw at the box office.
Pollstar, a leader in live event tracking, noted Peter’s dominance in ticket sales, although his actual earnings would be somewhat lower than the reported gross income.
Stand-Up Comedy Takes Center Stage
Pollstar’s JR Lind discussed how the mainstreaming of stand-up comedy has accelerated in recent years, with social media, streaming, and podcasts boosting the careers of comedians.
“Comedians now have the tools to reach their audience anywhere, anytime, building fanbases that rival those of pop stars,” Lind said.
“They’re no longer just the court jesters of society; they’re now deeply embedded in serious cultural conversations.”
New Tour Dates and Locations
Peter Kay’s tour is far from over.
He’s announced 21 additional dates for November 2024, with shows scheduled to begin in February 2025 and conclude in February 2026.
This new leg will include stops in 16 cities, marking his first performances in places like Aberdeen’s P&J Live, Brighton Centre, Bournemouth International Centre, and Isle of Man’s Villa Marina.
As if this wasn’t impressive enough, Peter also made history by becoming the first artist to secure a monthly residency at the O2 Arena in London, with performances scheduled there through July 2025.
A Long-Awaited Return to the Stage
Peter Kay’s tour kicked off in December 2022 after a five-year hiatus, during which he stayed out of the spotlight due to personal reasons.
While Peter has remained tight-lipped about the details of his extended break, his return to the stage has been nothing short of triumphant.
He has opened up about personal experiences, including a medical nightmare involving kidney stones, and shared a touching story about the loss of a family member.
A Look Back at His Time Away
Before announcing his return to the stage, Peter had largely disappeared from public view, leaving fans speculating about the reasons for his absence.
His social media went quiet until March 2018, when he shared news of a charity screening for Peter Kay’s Car Share, benefiting The Lily Foundation.
The charity helps children with mitochondrial disease, an organization Peter has personal ties to.
Afterward, he maintained a low profile, reportedly living in Tipperary, Ireland, where he kept a very private life.
The Return to Public Life
Peter’s first major public appearance after his time away came in 2019, when he made a surprise appearance at a screening of Car Share in Blackpool.
This event raised £34,000 for The Lily Foundation, and Peter took a moment to pose with fans during a tram ride.
Later in 2019, he attended a pantomime in Crewe and Nativity! The Musical in London, much to the delight of those around him.
In February 2020, he announced a return to the stage with six Dance For Life shows, but these performances were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
He did, however, make a brief return to TV in April 2020 for the BBC’s Big Night In special.
A Triumphant Return to the Stage
Peter Kay’s return to live performances was eagerly awaited, and when he finally returned to touring in November 2022, it was a monumental event.
His first night in Manchester moved him to tears as the crowd gave him a standing ovation that lasted several minutes.
Overcome with emotion, Peter humorously remarked, “Lovely Manchester, you made me cry… where did it come from, all that emotion?”
It was a heartwarming moment that highlighted just how much his fans had missed him.
Now, with several more shows lined up and a new phase of his career underway, Peter Kay continues to prove why he remains one of the UK’s most beloved comedians.
