The video, which came under heavy scrutiny, featured Smith addressing the camera with the phrase, “Just checking in on my friends who are struggling this week.
” She then tapped her chest three times and extended her arm with her palm facing down, which closely mirrored a gesture previously made by Elon Musk during Trump’s inauguration.
At the end of the video, Smith expressed sympathy, saying, “My heart goes out to you.”
The Fallout and Resignation
As backlash continued to grow, Smith took swift action by making her TikTok account private.
Shortly after, she announced her resignation from the Towamencin Township Board of Supervisors, citing the desire to allow the township to move forward without the distraction caused by the video.
In her resignation letter, she stated, “To allow the Township to move forward without the encumbrance of the fallout of my video, I tender my resignation from the Towamencin Township Board of Supervisors effective immediately.”
The board swiftly issued a statement denouncing the incident, stressing that such conduct would not be tolerated.
Smith, in turn, defended herself, claiming that the video was “mischaracterized” and that she had no intention of causing offense.
She emphasized her commitment to treating all individuals with dignity and respect, insisting that she abhorred racism, antisemitism, and discrimination in any form.
Elon Musk’s Controversial Defense
The controversy surrounding Smith’s video comes amid ongoing debates over a similar gesture made by Elon Musk during the inauguration of President Donald Trump.
Musk’s controversial move—placing his hand over his heart and extending it outward—was interpreted by many as a Nazi salute.
Musk later defended his actions, poking fun at accusations by referencing prominent Nazi figures such as Rudolf Hess, Joseph Goebbels, Hermann Göring, and Heinrich Himmler in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Musk’s post included sarcastic comments about Nazi officials and criticized the use of preferred pronouns.
The response to Musk’s comments was mixed.
Some social media users took offense, while others dismissed the backlash, viewing it as exaggerated.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu even weighed in, defending Musk and labeling the accusations as false.

Musk’s father, Errol Musk, also came to his defense, dismissing the criticisms as “absolute nonsense” and arguing that the gesture Musk made was a universal symbol of respect rather than anything linked to Nazi symbolism.
Musk himself used the controversy to accuse “radical leftists” of hypocrisy, claiming they were condemning him as a Nazi while simultaneously supporting Hamas.
