Eventually, the situation reached a point where the pilots felt they could no longer continue the flight safely.

They alerted Japanese authorities and made the unusual decision to turn the Boeing 737 around—adding another two hours in the air just to return to the same airport they left.

When the plane finally touched back down at Narita around 11 p.m., police boarded the aircraft and escorted the disruptive passenger off.

For the rest of the passengers, the frustration was real.

One traveler said no one was told what was happening until the pilot announced the return, noting that they were only about 30 minutes away from Shanghai at that point.
