Parly Committee concerned over deluge of counterfeit goods into SA

Parliament’s Standing Committee on Finance has expressed concern about the deluge of counterfeit goods into the country saying this threatens the economy.

As a result, the committee says it will embark on an oversight visit to three major ports of entry.

The committee will visit OR Tambo International Airport, Beitbridge border and the Durban Harbour to conduct an inspection of the South African Revenue Service (SARS)’s custom duties.

Committee chairperson Joe Maswanganyi says, “We are concerned as MPs on the continue inflow of counterfeit goods into the country. It is a very serious threat to the economy and it is undermining the sovereignty of this country. [We want to] see for ourselves as to how SARS and their colleagues go about administering those ports of entries in terms of customs.”

In 2021, counterfeit goods worth R10 million were seized at the Lebombo border post.
